Apple Explains Why iPads Don't Just Run macOS

iPadOS 26 allows iPads to function much more like Macs, with a new app windowing system, a swipe-down menu bar at the top of the screen, and more. However, Apple has stopped short of allowing iPads to run macOS, and it has now explained why.In an interview this week with Swiss tech journalist Rafael Zeier, Apple's software engineering chief Craig Federighi said that iPadOS 26's new Mac-like features strike a good balance between productivity and simplicity. He added that macOS is not optimized for touch-screens, although rumors suggest that might change one day."We want to retain all the simplicity of the iPad, but still allow iPad users who want to go deeper and further to push it at their own pace to doing more," said Federighi, in a sit-down interview at Apple Park's podcast studio. "I think with macOS, you'd lose what makes iPad iPad, which is the ultimate touch device. But there are lots of things the two platforms can learn from one another, and that's where we've adapted our best ideas to each."The quote above is only a portion of Federighi's answer, with the full interview available below. For those who are still looking for a true iPad and Mac hybrid, Apple is reportedly working on everything from touch-screen Macs to a 19-inch foldable iPad, so the dream of using macOS on a touch-screen might be just a few years away.Related Roundups: iPad Pro, WWDC 2025Tag: Craig FederighiBuyer's Guide: iPad Pro (Caution)Related Forum: Apple, Inc and Tech IndustryThis article, "Apple Explains Why iPads Don't Just Run macOS" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Novant Health nurse discusses the technologies that help shape a career

Panissa Caldwell, RN, sees technology transforming the nursing journey. As both a seasoned clinician and educator, she understands the hard and soft skills today's nurses need to thrive – and sees the potential for the technology to support them at every stage, from virtual simulations in training to tele-mentoring and continuing education.Today, Caldwell is director of clinical services at Novant Health, a four-state health system that serves the Southeastern United States. And she knows how nursing programs are training students on the latest technologies they will need to use in the field.Technology part of the curricula"With the rise of telehealth and electronic health records, nursing curricula now include training on digital tools and technologies," she explained. "Students learn to use EHR systems, telehealth platforms and other technologies essential for modern healthcare delivery. Long gone are the days of nurses using pen and paper to write everything down."Another exciting advancement is the use of advanced, state-of-the-art simulation labs and trainings to provide students with hands-on experience in a controlled environment," she continued. "High-fidelity simulators allow students to practice clinical skills and decision making in realistic scenarios without risk to patients."Students can perform procedures and communicate with patients, much like they would in real-life situations. This helps future nurses prepare for clinicals in the hospital setting and feel more comfortable using today's hospital technologies, she added. And hospitals are using various technologies to address issues like high nurse turnover and an increase in feelings of being overwhelmed.IT eases burdens"It's true, and I see it every day – nurses are up against a lot right now," she said. "But I'm also seeing the potential impact of technology, when used correctly, to ease the burden nurses face."One technology that's making a significant difference is telehealth," she continued. "The expansion of remote care has expanded learning opportunities for novice nurses, allowing them to observe and participate in remote consultations, gaining exposure to diverse patient interactions and interdisciplinary collaboration."One technology that has a lot of potential to affect the nursing journey is artificial intelligence."In my experience, today physicians are the key adopters of AI, particularly to support documentation," Caldwell noted. "But I believe there is great potential for nurses to leverage AI in the near term to support their workflows, improve patient experience and transform the way we train nursing students."First, nurses can leverage AI to help give patients some of their independence back," she continued. "Imagine a patient using voice recognition technology to call a family member and share updates or turn the lights on. AI support for these everyday tasks can allow nurses to create a better patient environment and experience."AI in the classroomFurther, AI is powerful in the nursing classroom, she added."Nursing educators can teach students how AI tools can analyze patient data and identify potential health risks or outcomes, improving their analytical skills," she said. "Some programs incorporate AI-driven chatbots that simulate patient interactions, helping students practice communication skills and decision making."Today's students are learning how new technologies like AI can support clinical decision making, leading to enhanced patient assessment and treatment planning," she added.Outside of technology, there are other ways the field is nurturing younger talent. The benefits of mentors"I'm a huge believer in the power of mentorship – it makes such a difference for new nurses," Caldwell said. "Mentors make it easier for new nurses to see the big picture, and they provide a lot of confidence, especially in tough times when they may feel like they're at the end of their rope."A powerful story of mentorship that I love is that of Elleton 'Mickey' McCullough, a former nurse now in her 70s who has mentored several generations of nurses," she continued. To facilitate great mentor-mentee relationships, she recommends pairing novice nurses with experienced mentors who can provide guidance, share best practices, and discuss how to navigate new trends and technology."You can even consider tapping now-retired nurses to be 'on call' to answer questions and provide advice to newer nurses," she said. "I like to call this approach 'phone a friend' and have seen a lot of success with it on my team."It's a win-win because while the newer nurses get expert advice from seasoned nurses, the retirees can share what they learned over decades of nursing and pass on their knowledge," she concluded.Follow Bill's HIT coverage on LinkedIn: Bill SiwickiEmail him: [email protected] IT News is a HIMSS Media publication. Apple's AirPods 4 earbuds are cheaper than ever right now

Apple's AirPods 4 earbuds are cheaper than ever right now

Just in time for a last-minute Father's Day gift (or perhaps a little treat for yourself, because you deserve nice things), Apple's AirPods 4 have dropped back down to their lowest price to date. You can snap up a pair for $99. That's $30 off the list price. This discount is for the base version of the earbuds without active noise cancellation (ANC). All the same, this is a good deal on our pick for the best budget AirPods, especially if foregoing ANC doesn't bother you too much. We gave the AirPods 4 a score of 88 in our review. The improved fit and comfort, and upgraded sound quality compared with the previous version are definite plus points. The AirPods 4 include features seen in the higher end AirPods Pro 2 but, unfortunately, not that model's onboard volume controls. The lack of wireless charging and Apple's Conversation Awareness feature are also negatives. However, due in large part to the H2 chip that's included in the AirPods 4 (the same one that powers AirPods Pro 2), you'll get features such as Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, "cinema-quality" audio for FaceTime, Adaptive EQ and Voice Isolation (which helps eliminate background noise). With Siri Interactions, you can nod or shake your head to accept or reject calls, and respond to or dismiss messages and notifications. When Apple rolls out iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26 this fall, the company will release a firmware update for AirPods 4 (as well as AirPods 4 with ANC and the second-gen AirPods Pro). This update will bring new features to the earbuds, such as the ability to use them to control iPhone and iPad cameras. Apple is also promising "studio quality recording" that should help creators better capture sound, even in noisy environments. Audio quality upgrades are on the way too. Check out our coverage of the best Apple deals for more discounts, and follow @EngadgetDeals on X for the latest tech deals and buying advice. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/deals/apples-airpods-4-earbuds-are-cheaper-than-ever-right-now-144223181.html?src=rss

8BitDo’s Ultimate 2C controller drops to $25

If you’re looking for a versatile new wireless controller that isn’t exclusive to a particular platform, 8BitDo’s various pads are always worth considering. And Amazon’s current deal on the brand’s Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller is nearly the cheapest we’ve seen. Right now, if you pick up the controller in either its Purple or Green colorways, you’ll pay $25.49, as opposed to $30 or above (the special edition Black Wukong version costs $35) for the other available colors. The lowest price we’ve ever seen this model at is $25. If you’re a console gamer you’ll need to look elsewhere, but the Ultimate 2C plays nice with Android devices and Windows PCs, connecting either via Bluetooth in the case of the former, or over 2.4G or a wired connection for PC. There’s also a mode switch button to make it easy to hop between devices. The controller offers extra bumpers that sit next to the standard left and right bumpers, and these can be remapped without the need for additional software, while the Hall Effect joysticks are precise and reassuringly durable. The Ultimate 2C is compatible with devices running Windows 10 and above, and Android 9.0 or above. You can expect 32 hours of playtime over a Bluetooth connection, or 19 hours when using the wireless 2.4G adapter. Follow @EngadgetDeals on X for the latest tech deals and buying advice. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/8bitdos-ultimate-2c-controller-drops-to-25-144020474.html?src=rss

Joint Commission teams with CHAI on artificial intelligence guidance for health systems

The Joint Commission announced this week that it's working with the Coalition for Health AI on a new collaboration to develop a set of healthcare AI best practices and promote their adoption at hospitals and health systems nationwide.WHY IT MATTERSTJC, which sets healthcare standards and accredits more than 23,000 healthcare organizations across the U.S., says it will work with CHAI – a nonprofit founded by an array of providers and technology developers to spur standards for responsible AI – to co-develop new tools and playbooks toward those goals. They'll also create a "new certification program rooted in The Joint Commission's platform for evidence-based standards, and CHAI's consensus-based best practices for health AI," according to the announcement. They said the first guidance will be available in fall of 2025, with the AI cert program to follow.THE LARGER TRENDThe two groups point to recent research that shows adoption of AI in healthcare is proliferating across a wide array of use cases, from workflow automation to predictive analytics, patient monitoring to drug approvals. Some 46% of American healthcare organizations are in initial implementation of generative AI, they note. But approaches to AI implementation still vary widely, and health systems are seeking concrete guidance to help to "protect their staff, patients and operations," according to TJC and CHAI."This effort between The Joint Commission and the Coalition for Health AI represents a thoughtful approach to navigating how to best deploy and implement these emerging technologies," said Dr. Michael Pfeffer, chief information and digital officer at Stanford Health Care, in a statement"This partnership, the guidance, tools and certification it aims to provide will help accelerate innovation, mitigate risk, and enable healthcare organizations to fully leverage AI's potential to improve patient outcomes and clinician workflows," he added.ON THE RECORD"In the decade ahead, nothing has the capacity to change healthcare more than AI in terms of innovation, transformation and disruption," said Dr. Jonathan B. Perlin, president and CEO of The Joint Commission. "While it's impossible to predict exactly what healthcare will look like over that time, AI's integration and potential to improve quality patient care is enormous – but only if we do it right." "Partnering with The Joint Commission means we can help healthcare organizations utilize AI and the many benefits these new technologies bring, at a scale we have never been able to achieve before," added Dr. Brian Anderson, president and CEO of CHAI. "Together, we're leading the transformation of data-driven healthcare, one where AI is embedded into every healthcare program – regardless of population, geographic area, or resources – to elevate patient safety and quality, and ultimately improve health outcomes for all." Apple to Phase Out Rosetta 2 Starting With macOS 28 as Intel Era Ends

Following its WWDC keynote on Monday, Apple updated a developer document to indicate that Rosetta 2 will remain available through macOS 27.Rosetta 2 enables Macs with Apple silicon (Arm architecture) to run apps that were built for Macs with an Intel processor (x86 architecture), by translating code.Starting with macOS 28, Apple said that only a limited version of Rosetta 2 will remain available for older games that rely on Intel-based frameworks:Rosetta was designed to make the transition to Apple silicon easier, and we plan to make it available for the next two major macOS releases – through macOS 27 – as a general-purpose tool for Intel apps to help developers complete the migration of their apps. Beyond this timeframe, we will keep a subset of Rosetta functionality aimed at supporting older unmaintained gaming titles, that rely on Intel-based frameworks. The document also reiterates that macOS Tahoe will be the final macOS release that supports Intel-based Macs. However, Apple said that Intel-based Macs will continue to receive security updates for an additional three years.macOS Tahoe is compatible with only a handful of Intel-based Macs, including the 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019), 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports), 27-inch iMac (2020), and Mac Pro (2019).Tags: Apple Silicon, Intel, RosettaThis article, "Apple to Phase Out Rosetta 2 Starting With macOS 28 as Intel Era Ends" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
