Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has announced that it will be splitting up into two separate media companies. The new structure will see one entity retain Warner Bros. film, television and game studios, along with New Line Cinema, DC Studios, HBO and HBO Max, while the other will hold the company’s full portfolio of live cable channels, which includes many household names like CNN, HGTV, Cartoon Network, Discovery, TCL and others.In a shareholder deck, WBD refers to these two entities as “WBD Global Networks” and “WBD Streaming & Studios,” and highlights the strengths of each portfolio. The company points out that the newly minted entities would each produce healthy free cash flow and intends for each to be listed as publicly traded companies. This comes just three years after the original merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery.David Zaslav, the current CEO and president of WBD, will serve as president and CEO of Streaming & Studios. Gunnar Wiedenfels, currently CFO of WBD, will serve as president and CEO of Global Networks. Both remain in their current roles until the separation is complete.“The cultural significance of this great company and the impactful stories it has brought to life for more than a century have touched countless people all over the world. It’s a treasured legacy we will proudly continue in this next chapter of our celebrated history,” said Zaslav in a statement. “By operating as two distinct and optimized companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today’s evolving media landscape.”In an investor presentation, WBD announced it will be taking a $17.5 billion loan from J.P. Morgan to assist in a cash tender and consent solicitation for all of its approximately$35.5 billion in outstanding bonds. This means it will be buying back some of the bonds while also asking bondholders to loosen their terms, and will offer cash incentives to those who agree to sell or restructure. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the majority of the total debt will be held by Global Networks, while “a not-insignificant portion” will remain with Streaming & Studios. It's a notable release in part because this is the first time ever that Activision is releasing Black Ops games in back to back years. What is Call of Duty 2025?This year's Call of Duty game is Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Announced at the Xbox Games Showcase, Black Ops 7 takes place in the year 2035 and is a sequel to both Black Ops 6 (set in the '90s) and Black Ops 2 (set in 2025). Where to find Scout Spires in FortniteAround five or so Scout Spires appear in each round, and they're all marked by a small diamond-like icon on the map. This icon is a similar shape to the Overlord Spire one, but a lot smaller. These ones also spawn randomly across the island in each round, so you need to check the map to track them down. How to damage Overlord Spires in FortniteOverlord Spires are the more dangerous and deadly combat trials of the two, so never approach this challenge without a solid collection of loot to back you up. Once you're ready to take it on, focus on aiming for the glowing yellow spots on the Spire. These are weak points that drain the Spires' health much more quickly. Screenshot by DestructoidThe Overlord Spire takes damage regardless of where you shoot at it, so just keep striking it with everything you've got until the health bar is depleted. It has a few protective measures you should watch out for, though, including a deadly laser that targets you and some demon guards who spawn in and fight to protect it. Consider fighting it with friends or purchasing a hireable NPC if you need some help taking it down. How to damage Scout Spires in FortniteScout Spires can be damaged by attacking any part of them, although aiming for the face is the best way to deal lots of damage quickly. The face is a weak point, so any attacks you aim at it will drain the health bar more quickly. All Scout Spires are essentially smaller and weaker versions of the Overlord Spire, so if you've faced the latter, taking on these ones should be no challenge at all. These trials also have a laser attack, although it's much smaller, and demon guards who will appear to defend it. Washington DC Dominates The US Gun-Deaths League Gun violence remains one of the most pressing public health issues in the United States.But as Visual Capitalist;s Bruno Venditti shws in the following chart, according to data from USAFacts as of December 2023, gun-related deaths vary significantly across states, reflecting long-standing regional and demographic differences.Preliminary numbers show that between January and August 2024, an estimated 30,100 people died from gun-related injuries in the U.S., 5% fewer than during the same period in 2023.The rate of gun-related deaths in the U.S. has shifted over time. In the early 1990s, the rate fluctuated between 14.5 and 15.0 deaths per 100,000 people. From 2000 to 2014, however, that figure declined and remained below 10.5 deaths per 100,000.By 2023, the rate rose again to 13.7 per 100,000—still 8% lower than its peak in 1993.States With the Highest Gun Death RatesWashington, DC recorded the highest rate in the country in 2023, with 28.5 deaths per 100,000 residents, more than 60% above the next highest state.States With the Lowest Gun Death RatesAt the other end of the spectrum, several states reported significantly lower rates. Those include Hawaii, Utah, and Nebraska.Although they receive less public attention than gun-related homicides, suicides have consistently made up the majority of gun deaths in the United States.
