As the public defender work stoppage continues in Massachusetts, dozens of criminal cases were tossed out Tuesday, and more could be coming within the next few weeks.In fact, more than 800 criminal cases could be dismissed over the next few weeks.Judge Tracy-Lee Lyons, the chief justice at Boston Municipal Court, dismissed around 100 cases Tuesday, giving indigent defendants a pass since they haven’t been provided with an attorney, as required by the Constitution. The charges range from drug cases, to assault and battery to shoplifting.Back in May, bar advocates stopped accepting cases, saying public defenders are underpaid at $65 an hour – which is far lower than what neighboring states pay.These independent contractors represent roughly 80% of the defendants in the state who can’t afford their own attorneys.That has overwhelmed the Committee for Public Counsel Services, which takes the other 20% — leaving hundreds of defendants without legal representation.The cases are getting dismissed because people have been without a lawyer for at least 45 days. The situation is not expected to get any better anytime soonEarlier this month, defendants held for at least seven days without representation in Suffolk and Middlesex Counties were ordered released.Meanwhile, the courts said if out-of-custody defendants still don’t have representation within 45 days, charges must be dismissed without prejudice. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are caused by impacts to the head and are common in sports, vehicle collisions, and other accidents. Severe injuries can cause permanent disability or death, but because the damage occurs deep in the brain, studying it can be challenging. Researchers at the Illinois Institute of Technology developed a sensitive method to scan brain tissue at the cellular level to spot traumatic injuries. Using this technique, Orgel examined dinosaur fossils from the Cretaceous period, including a 68 million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex, and discovered that the preserved collagen comes from regions of the collagen structure meant to protect other, more delicate structures, including in the brain.
