Nintendo Switch 2: Everything announced including a new Mario Kart game, new Switch features and more

After months of anticipation and years of speculation, Nintendo is finally spilling all the beans about the Switch 2. In a Nintendo Direct presentation, the company is filling in questions we've had about the console since it was first officially revealed in a short teaser this past January.Switch 2 launch date and pricingWe finally know when the console will be available: June 5, 2025. It'll cost $450 at launch, and pre-orders start on April 9.Switch 2 hardwareThe Switch 2 console has the same thickness but has a much larger display — 7.9 inches at a 1080p resolution, versus the 6.2-inch 720p screen on the old console. And it runs at up to 120fps. It is an LCD display, rather than OLED, but it supports HDR at least. As expected, the new Joy-Con controllers attach magnetically and have much bigger SL and SR buttons for when you're playing on a single Joy-Con controller. The sticks are also bigger, and each Joy-Con can be used as a mouse on compatible games. The built-in stand looks much better than the ones on older Switch systems, and there are two USB-C ports on the console as well. Nintendo also highlighted 3D audio when using compatible headphones, and the speakers on the console itself should be a lot better as well. The console has 256GB of storage, far surpassing the 32GB on the original model. The Switch 2 dock outputs at up to 4K with compatible games and the dock has a built-in fan to keep things cool when running at higher resolutions.Switch 2 is using similar game cards to the original Switch, but Nintendo notes that they're faster; you'll have to use microSD Express cards for extra storage this time though. Standard microSD ones won't be compatible with the new hardware.A new Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller will also be available with the C button to activate GameChat, and it also has GL and GR buttons on the back that you can assign to any specific actions. There's also a headphone jack, too.Voice and video chatThe first new feature Nintendo highlighted on its updated Joy-Con controllers was the C button. The C button lets you enter the new GameChat features. You can voice chat while playing using a built-in microphone, even when the console is docked. It's the first time that a Nintendo system has had voice chat, and you can also share your game screen with friends as you play as well. For example, in Mario Kart this gives you more of a feel like you're all playing connected to a TV even though you're remote, because you can see everything that your friends are doing as well. And the chat and screen-share features work even if you're all playing different games, so you can just get a group together to hang out while playing different titles. There's also a Switch 2 camera that enables video chat that'll show you on screen while you're playing. These features will require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, but Nintendo will offer it for free to everyone until March 31, 2026.Mario Kart WorldAs expected, we're finally getting a new entry in the venerable Mario Kart series, Mario Kart World. It looks looks familiar while also showing off some wild new tricks, like skateboard-style grinds on rails and wall jumps. The courses also look much larger and wider than any we've ever seen before. For the first time, it looks like there's an open world connecting all the various courses, and weather and time of day will change.Nintendo also says that you can go off-course and drive "virtually everywhere." And fitting those huge tracks, the Grand Prix will have 24 competitors in one race. Overall, it's a massive update which feels appropriate — the last Mario Kart game arrived way back in 2014 for the Wii U and was updated for the original Switch. It'll be out the same day as the Switch 2, June 5.Other games coming to Switch 2Nintendo ran down a handful of other games coming to the Switch 2, including Eldin Ring: Tarnished Edition, a new title called Drag x Drive that uses the Switch 2 mouse controls in what looks like an extreme wheelchair sporting event, Hades II, Street Fighter 6, Split Fiction, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 +4, Hitman: World of Assassination and Daemon x Machina.Nintendo is also working on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, which will be out this winter; it's being developed in with Koei Techmo games and will have the same combat-focused vibes as other Dynasty Warrior-style titles.From Software is also releasing a new game exclusively for the Switch 2 called The Duskbloods in 2026. It feels a lot like Bloodbourne at first glance.Perhaps the biggest first-party game to be revealed today besides Mario Kart World is a new 3D platformer starring Donkey Kong: Donkey Kong Bonanza. It definitely has similar vibes to 3D Mario adventures, but in a totally new context.There's a laundry list of games that were mentioned today; Nintendo has helpfully pulled them together in this press release.Finally, Nintendo has announced that the Switch Online service will host another classic console, the GameCube. The initial game library includes The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, F-Zero GX and SOULCALIBUR II. For the first time on Nintendo's classic consoles through the Switch Online service, GameCube games will run at higher resolutions than the original titles.Nintendo Switch 2 edition gamesIn addition to games expressly designed for the Switch 2, Nintendo will also be releasing "Switch 2 edition" for selected titles, like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. From Software has announced a new IPFrom Software's new RPG, The Duskbloods, has been announced during the Nintendo Switch 2 broadcast as an exclusive Switch 2 game. In this gallery, we'll take a look at potential characters, weapons, mechanics, boss fights, and the game's setting and timeline via a series of images from the announcement trailer. While the game isn't out until 2026, and no narrow window within that year has been announced just yet, we can already analyze the trailer to find out plenty of information about the vampiric title from the Elden Ring developer. A scarred handOpening the trailer, a hand is shown carved with a symbol as a female figure grasps it while reciting, "I give you my blood. I give you my life. Turn, oh wheel, and transport him to a night of moonlight, to humanity's very dusk." It's unclear whether this is the process of converting a deceased human into the vampire-like creatures we see later in the trailer. A British looking environment Some scenes in The Duskbloods appear to be set in the UK, or London specifically, thanks to the appearance of clock towers that resemble Big Ben, and the city's skyline. Big Ben was constructed in 1859, giving us a glimpse into a potential timeline for the game. A train station in The DuskbloodsThe appearance of a train station and railway lines also adds more context to the game's timeline. Since the first steam railway became operational in 1804, the game might be set more recently than this. A church scene Multiple large, gothic churches and associated architecture are shown throughout the trailers, which fits aesthetically very well with the vampiric themes throughout. A silver-haired male character The identity of the silver-haired male character remains a mystery, since he doesn't participate in dialogue throughout the trailer. However, thanks to similarities between the opening scene and a later scene where he's surveying the city skyline, we know that this character is the same one that's deceased at the beginning of the trailer, with the scarred hand. The only female character seen in the trailer The only female character seen in the trailer still hides her face during all appearances. She dresses in a traditional Japanese-style robe with straw hat, which could also be seen as a samurai hat. Later in the trailer, she spins a blade at rapid frequency as she prepares to descend on the city. Jetpacks? A small creature clad in armor is seen wading through some water before launching a jetpack across a cavern. The functionality and appearance of these fueled engines suggests the game is far more recent than From Software's Elden Ring, which was set 5,000 years in the past. A younger, white-haired character This younger, white-haired character is seen multiple times throughout the trailer, including taking on a large, menacing-looking enemy that seems imposing enough to be suitable as a boss fight. This strange orb could be a boss This strange-looking orb with legs and an unsettling, menacing expression is large and imposing enough to be suitable as a potential boss in The Duskbloods. Neck-biting as a method of killing Adding further legitimacy to the vampire theories, the silver-haired character is seen biting on the neck of a creature, presumably a human, to kill them. Afterwards, he draws dark energy from the sky, which could indicate that characters grow stronger from feeding on blood. Drawing energy from the sky Following on from the previous image, this is how the character appears when he's drawing that dark energy from the skies. A strange frog-like enemyWhile this strange, frog-like enemy is not indicated as a boss, as no characters are seen fighting it, the odd expression on its face is strikingly similar to that of the orb-like boss from earlier in the trailer. We'd assume this sewer-dwelling amphibian is also a boss fight at some point in the game. A striking weapon While guns and blades are seen in the trailer, this striking image of a character wielding a forked weapon shows that there will be more traditional From Software melee weapons included in The Duskbloods. This particular weapon looks especially heavy to swing, so hopefully those heavy rolls from the Dark Souls series will come in handy here. Raising the dead Towards the end of the trailer, a character is seen raising their arms to the skies, reanimating corpses that litter the streets. Perhaps it'll be an option to control the undead to your advantage, forming armies of zombified allies. We can dream. A strange, scared creature Closing the trailer, after the game's 2026 release date announcement, is this strange dark creature. It looks warily from one eye as its fur glistens with golden markings, or carvings, that are of a similar style to the bloodied carving in the opening scene.

Investors are turning bearish on the U.S. dollar as Trump tariffs loom

“Currency trader positioning is turning bearish on the dollar,” Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM U.S., said on Monday. Bank of America’s Athanasios Vamvakidis said the greenback is likely to rally in the near term, but this will “most likely be an opportunity to sell.” Market watchers told CNBC they see potential upside for the euro, the British pound and Australia and New Zealand’s currencies. The rollout of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs regime is dampening sentiment toward the dollar and prompting investors to look elsewhere for their foreign exchange (FX) trades, strategists told CNBC. The dollar index, which measures the value of the greenback against a basket of major rivals, was little changed on Wednesday morning. The U.S. currency began a steady rise in late 2024 that peaked in mid-January — however, the dollar index has steadily pared some of those gains in recent weeks.The dollar has historically been widely seen as a safe haven asset for investors, given its status as the world’s reserve currency and dominance in international borrowing, payments and trades. When the dollar strengthens, U.S. exports become more expensive, while imports become cheaper. The greenback’s value can also impact global monetary policy, capital flows and corporate earnings.“Currency trader positioning is turning bearish on the dollar and becoming more bullish on the currencies of major U.S. trading partners as the United States prepares to launch a multinational trade war,” said Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM U.S., in a research note published Monday.Euro expected to riseBrusuelas pointed to trades in the euro as a signal of “erosion of confidence in the dollar.”“From late October until the first week of March, the majority of euro positioning was long the dollar,” he said in Monday’s note. “But for three weeks now, net positioning is long the euro.”Jordan Rochester, head of FICC strategy and executive director at Mizuho Bank’s EMEA arm, told CNBC he held “a down then up view” on the euro against the dollar. He sees the euro falling to somewhere between $1.06 and $1.07 before climbing to $1.12 or higher by the end of the year.“I expect this market to price in ‘maximum pain’ once we know the details of the tariffs,” he said in an email, arguing that this presented an “opportunity to take the other side.”“Tariffs [are] unlikely to get worse once fully priced in and [the] EU and others [are likely] to respond with ... retaliatory tariffs of their own which will lead to a recovery later on,” he said. Athanasios Vamvakidis, global head and managing director of G10 FX strategy at Bank of America, told CNBC he saw downside ahead for the dollar, despite expecting tariffs to have an immediate positive impact on the greenback.“For the dollar we have been and we are still bearish for the year as a whole,” he said on a call. “We believe the market is already pricing selective tariffs, but it will get tariffs across the board.”He told CNBC that the dollar could rally this week in the immediate aftermath of tariffs coming into effect, but noted that this “most likely will be an opportunity to sell.”“Beyond the very short term, there are two channels that should lead to dollar weakness,” Vamvakidis explained. “First, when you have the U.S. against the rest of the world in a trade war scenario, then the U.S. eventually will suffer more because ... when you compare it with the rest of the world, the rest of the world is larger. Second, tariffs suggest stagflationary risks — and right now, the market is very concerned about such risks.”Like Brusuelas and Rochester, he predicted that the euro would eventually be boosted by Trump’s trade war. While the U.S. contends with a policy mix that will likely be negative for its currency, Europe is focusing on “growth friendly policies,” Vamvakidis said.“Germany announcing a massive fiscal stimulus, Europe announcing massive spending on defense, plans for structural reforms to focus on growth and competitiveness,” he said. “So far these are plans, but we didn’t even [have] such plans before, and coming from Germany, the economy with the weakest growth in the euro zone and the largest economy in the euro zone and the tightest fiscal policy in the euro zone, this is really a game changer.”Vamvakidis said his team sees the euro reaching $1.15 this year and $1.20 in 2026.Sterling bullsBank of America’s Vamvakidis also argued the British pound has the potential to rise as Trump’s tariffs regime comes into play, noting that the U.S. President has aimed tariff threats at the EU while hinting that Britain could be spared.“Also, there is positive seasonality for sterling in April,” he said. “So in the short term, we should see sterling doing relatively well. For the year as a whole, we also like sterling against the dollar. Against the euro it depends on the implementation of EU reforms.”In a note at the end of March, analysts at Maybank upwardly revised their forecasts for the British pound, saying they now see sterling hitting $1.26 by the end of the year before rising to $1.31 in early 2026. On Wednesday morning, the British currency was trading at around $1.29 against the U.S. dollar.“We ... turn more bullish on the GBP with its plans to increase defence spending, maintain fiscal discipline and easing stagflation risks,” they said. “We maintain our belief that the GBP will be more resilient on the basis that the UK as a services-oriented economy is less likely to be influenced by Trump trade policies. As a close ally of the US, it will probably also be spared from significant actions by the Trump administration. This is in spite of an external environment that remains highly uncertain and challenging.”Australia, New Zealand currencies could be boostedThe Maybank analysts also predicted upside for the New Zealand dollar, giving the currency a target of $0.58 against the greenback by the end of 2024 — a 2.1% rise from current levels.“A rounding bottom has formed for the NZDUSD which portends further recovery,” Maybank’s analysts said, adding that the outlook for the currency remained positive as New Zealand’s economy recovered and the pace of monetary easing was likely to slow.“Both Australia and New Zealand also have stronger balance sheets than most other Western countries — in particular much lower debt to GDP ratios,” Alex King, a former FX trader and founder of personal finance platform Generation Money, said via email.“This means they have much more headroom for potential stimulus measures of their own and [it’s] another factor making them both attractive places for investors, which helps strengthen their currencies.”He added that both countries’ economies were “much less connected to the trade war narrative.”“To combat the effect of tariffs, China is looking at stimulus measures to boost its own economy and this is seen as a positive for the economies of both Australia and New Zealand, both of which tend to run trade surpluses with China,” King told CNBC.
