Dollar Hits 27-Month Lows: 'The Fed Should Cut Next Week,' Economist Says

The greenback hasn’t been this weak in over two years, as mounting evidence of disinflation and cracks in the labor market stripped away its appeal, prompting a louder call from economists for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates. The U.S. dollar index—a trade-weighted gauge measuring dollar strength broadly tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:UUP)—dropped to 97.60 on Thursday, the lowest since late March 2022.The slide came after a one-two punch of economic reports showed inflation cooling among consumers and producers while jobless claims surged to multi-year highs.Inflation Broadly Undershoots ForecastsThursday's data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed the Producer Price Index rose 2.6% in May from a year earlier, matching expectations but reflecting only a modest rise from April's revised 2.5%. On a monthly basis, PPI increased just 0.1%, below the 0.2% forecast.Core PPI, which strips out food and energy prices, cooled to 3.0% year-over-year — its lowest reading since August 2024 — and posted a minimal 0.1% monthly gain, missing the 0.3% estimate. The figures indicate that inflationary pressures in the production pipeline remain soft, despite tariff concerns.Released a day earlier, the Consumer Price Index for May rose 2.4% annually, a slight uptick from April's 2.3% ...Full story available on Benzinga.com

Apple's AirPods 4 earbuds are cheaper than ever right now

Apple's AirPods 4 earbuds are cheaper than ever right now

Just in time for a last-minute Father's Day gift (or perhaps a little treat for yourself, because you deserve nice things), Apple's AirPods 4 have dropped back down to their lowest price to date. You can snap up a pair for $99. That's $30 off the list price. This discount is for the base version of the earbuds without active noise cancellation (ANC). All the same, this is a good deal on our pick for the best budget AirPods, especially if foregoing ANC doesn't bother you too much. We gave the AirPods 4 a score of 88 in our review. The improved fit and comfort, and upgraded sound quality compared with the previous version are definite plus points. The AirPods 4 include features seen in the higher end AirPods Pro 2 but, unfortunately, not that model's onboard volume controls. The lack of wireless charging and Apple's Conversation Awareness feature are also negatives. However, due in large part to the H2 chip that's included in the AirPods 4 (the same one that powers AirPods Pro 2), you'll get features such as Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, "cinema-quality" audio for FaceTime, Adaptive EQ and Voice Isolation (which helps eliminate background noise). With Siri Interactions, you can nod or shake your head to accept or reject calls, and respond to or dismiss messages and notifications. When Apple rolls out iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26 this fall, the company will release a firmware update for AirPods 4 (as well as AirPods 4 with ANC and the second-gen AirPods Pro). This update will bring new features to the earbuds, such as the ability to use them to control iPhone and iPad cameras. Apple is also promising "studio quality recording" that should help creators better capture sound, even in noisy environments. Audio quality upgrades are on the way too. Check out our coverage of the best Apple deals for more discounts, and follow @EngadgetDeals on X for the latest tech deals and buying advice. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/deals/apples-airpods-4-earbuds-are-cheaper-than-ever-right-now-144223181.html?src=rss

Metal Gear Solid Delta Is Bringing Back The Gloriously Goofy Secret Theater From Snake Eater

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater looks like it'll be a faithful remake of Snake Eater, but it won't be all gloom and doom in this Cold War-era tale of espionage and betrayal. During the Konami Press Start showcase, the company announced that a goofier side of Metal Gear Solid will return, as the Secret Theater bonus feature will be included in the upcoming game. Not only will it feature all of the classic cutscenes from Snake Eater, but several new ones have been created for it as well. If you're unfamiliar with it, Secret Theater was originally an unlockable extra in Snake Eater that reimagined the endings to several cutscenes. These ranged from Snake causing a time paradox to legendary sniper The End falling in love with Eva, and the videos were originally only made for the eyes of Snake Eater's production team. These short clips were eventually placed on the official Snake Eater website, and several more were created thanks to them being popular with fans. The original videos will be found as collectibles inside the game, and for the new Secret Theater videos, players will have to track down enemy soldiers carrying rolls of film on their uniforms.Continue Reading at GameSpot

8BitDo’s Ultimate 2C controller drops to $25

If you’re looking for a versatile new wireless controller that isn’t exclusive to a particular platform, 8BitDo’s various pads are always worth considering. And Amazon’s current deal on the brand’s Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller is nearly the cheapest we’ve seen. Right now, if you pick up the controller in either its Purple or Green colorways, you’ll pay $25.49, as opposed to $30 or above (the special edition Black Wukong version costs $35) for the other available colors. The lowest price we’ve ever seen this model at is $25. If you’re a console gamer you’ll need to look elsewhere, but the Ultimate 2C plays nice with Android devices and Windows PCs, connecting either via Bluetooth in the case of the former, or over 2.4G or a wired connection for PC. There’s also a mode switch button to make it easy to hop between devices. The controller offers extra bumpers that sit next to the standard left and right bumpers, and these can be remapped without the need for additional software, while the Hall Effect joysticks are precise and reassuringly durable. The Ultimate 2C is compatible with devices running Windows 10 and above, and Android 9.0 or above. You can expect 32 hours of playtime over a Bluetooth connection, or 19 hours when using the wireless 2.4G adapter. Joint Commission teams with CHAI on artificial intelligence guidance for health systems

The Joint Commission announced this week that it's working with the Coalition for Health AI on a new collaboration to develop a set of healthcare AI best practices and promote their adoption at hospitals and health systems nationwide.WHY IT MATTERSTJC, which sets healthcare standards and accredits more than 23,000 healthcare organizations across the U.S., says it will work with CHAI – a nonprofit founded by an array of providers and technology developers to spur standards for responsible AI – to co-develop new tools and playbooks toward those goals. They'll also create a "new certification program rooted in The Joint Commission's platform for evidence-based standards, and CHAI's consensus-based best practices for health AI," according to the announcement. They said the first guidance will be available in fall of 2025, with the AI cert program to follow.THE LARGER TRENDThe two groups point to recent research that shows adoption of AI in healthcare is proliferating across a wide array of use cases, from workflow automation to predictive analytics, patient monitoring to drug approvals. Some 46% of American healthcare organizations are in initial implementation of generative AI, they note. But approaches to AI implementation still vary widely, and health systems are seeking concrete guidance to help to "protect their staff, patients and operations," according to TJC and CHAI."This effort between The Joint Commission and the Coalition for Health AI represents a thoughtful approach to navigating how to best deploy and implement these emerging technologies," said Dr. Michael Pfeffer, chief information and digital officer at Stanford Health Care, in a statement"This partnership, the guidance, tools and certification it aims to provide will help accelerate innovation, mitigate risk, and enable healthcare organizations to fully leverage AI's potential to improve patient outcomes and clinician workflows," he added.ON THE RECORD"In the decade ahead, nothing has the capacity to change healthcare more than AI in terms of innovation, transformation and disruption," said Dr. Jonathan B. Perlin, president and CEO of The Joint Commission. "While it's impossible to predict exactly what healthcare will look like over that time, AI's integration and potential to improve quality patient care is enormous – but only if we do it right." "Partnering with The Joint Commission means we can help healthcare organizations utilize AI and the many benefits these new technologies bring, at a scale we have never been able to achieve before," added Dr. Brian Anderson, president and CEO of CHAI. "Together, we're leading the transformation of data-driven healthcare, one where AI is embedded into every healthcare program – regardless of population, geographic area, or resources – to elevate patient safety and quality, and ultimately improve health outcomes for all." Dua Lipa confirms long-speculated engagement to actor Callum Turner

Dua Lipa has confirmed her engagement to the English actor Callum Turner, months after speculation began. She went on the record about the engagement in a cover story for British Vogue’s July issue, published Thursday, calling it “very exciting.” The 29-year-old said she was obsessed with the ring Turner had made for her.“It’s so me. It’s nice to know the person that you’re going to spend the rest of your life with knows you very well,” she told the magazine.Fans had theorized the ring Lipa began sporting in photos at the end of December signaled an engagement, but the pair did not publicly confirm the rumor for months, even after appearing together at last month’s Met Gala. Lipa says they haven’t set wedding plans yet — she’s still on tour and Turner is filming, “so we’re just enjoying this period,” she told British Vogue, adding that they try not to spend more than 2 1⁄2 weeks apart.Images of Lipa and Turner, 35, together began surfacing in January 2024. She told British Vogue that they had initially met at a London restaurant, before reconnecting during a dinner in L.A., where they learned they were both reading the same book: Hernan Diaz’s “Trust,” a Pulitzer Prize winner. (Lipa runs the influential Service95 Book Club.)The London-born, British Albanian powerhouse is credited with revitalizing a kind of energetic disco-pop sound in the mainstream, beginning with the release of her 2017 self-titled album and carrying throughout 2020’s “Future Nostalgia” and 2024’s “Radical Optimism.”“Dance music has such a long history of creating such a safe space. And I just want to embody that,” she told The Associated Press last year.Across her career, Lipa has won three Grammys and boasts five top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: 2017’s “New Rules,” 2019’s “Don’t Start Now,” 2020’s “Levitating,” 2021’s “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)” with Elton John, and 2023’s “Dance the Night,” from the star-studded “Barbie” soundtrack.Turner is known for his roles in the “Fantastic Beasts” movies as well as the George Clooney-directed “The Boys in the Boat” and World War ll drama series “Masters of the Air” on Apple TV+.

Called Jezero Mons, it is nearly half the size of the crater itself and could add critical clues to the habitability and volcanism of Mars, transforming how we understand Mars' geologic history.

Israel considering military strike on Iran, sources say

Israel is considering taking military action against Iran — most likely without U.S. support — in the coming days, even as President Donald Trump is in advanced discussions with Tehran about a diplomatic deal to curtail its nuclear program, according to five people with knowledge of the situation.Israel has become more serious about a unilateral strike on Iran as the negotiations between the United States and Iran appear closer to a preliminary or framework agreement that includes provisions about uranium enrichment that Israel views as unacceptable, according to NBC News.A unilateral strike or action by Israel against Iran would be a dramatic break with the Trump administration, which has argued against such a step. The Trump administration is awaiting a response from Iran about a proposed framework of a nuclear deal, and Trump has publicly said Tehran has become more hard-line in its negotiations. The notion of a new front in a simmering conflict has prompted the Trump administration to order all embassies within striking distance of Iranian missiles, aircraft and other assets (including missions in the Middle East, Northern Africa and Eastern Europe) to send cables with assessments about danger and about measures to mitigate risks to Americans and U.S. infrastructure, according to two sources familiar.U.S. and other officials are on alert awaiting the possibility of Israel’s striking Iran, the officials said. The White House has not briefed senior lawmakers on the issue, according to that aide and a U.S. official. One major concern is Iran’s retaliating against U.S. personnel or assets in the region for any action.Israel, which relies on intelligence or other direct and logistical assistance from the United States, may be in a position to take unilateral action against Tehran, the source familiar said. The sources familiar and officials were not aware of any planned U.S. involvement in the possible action. The United States could support with aerial refueling or intelligence sharing rather than kinetic support, but the sources and officials were not aware of plans for that, either, at this point.U.S. officials have announced that the voluntary departure of nonessential employees from the region. And the Defense Department announced the voluntary departure of military families from locations all across the U.S. Central Command area of operations. The CENTCOM commander, Gen. Erik Kurilla, was due to testify on Capitol Hill on Thursday, but the hearing was postponed late Wednesday without explanation. A source familiar said Kurilla had to focus on this unfolding situation.Another possible factor: Iran is rebuilding its strategic air defenses, and manned strikes will soon be exponentially more dangerous for Israeli pilots. In October, Israel damaged nearly every one of Iran’s strategic air defense systems (mainly S-300s), but much of the damage was to the radars or other parts that can be rebuilt. It’s possible Israel’s window for manned strikes, without being threatened by Iran’s coordinated strategic air defenses, is closing. While Israel would most likely prefer U.S. military and intelligence support for strikes — especially against Iranian nuclear facilities — it showed in October that it can do a lot alone.Michael Knights of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy said the evacuation of nonessential staff members at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq will send a message to Tehran that Trump will not necessarily hold Israel back from launching a threatened attack on Iran.“It’s about trying to get Iran to respect the president’s wishes,” Knights said.Iran has failed to meet a two-month deadline Trump set to reach an agreement on the country’s nuclear activities, and he is frustrated, he said. Both Knights and a source with knowledge of the matter said it was unclear whether Israel would undertake a limited military strike now or wait until nuclear negotiations played out further.Trump has expressed growing frustration over Iran’s stance at recent indirect talks, portraying Tehran as inflexible and slow-moving.“They’re just asking for things that you can’t do. They don’t want to give up what they have to give up,” Trump told reporters Monday. “They seek enrichment. We can’t have enrichment.”This story first appeared on NBCNews.com. America's uncertainty is Europe's power play, CEOs tell CNBC

Investors say capital and valuations are cheaper and more attractive in Europe. Unicredit CEO says Europe is faced with a “phenomenal opportunity.” U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has suggested that a trade deal deadline for the EU could be extended.Europe is being urged to capitalize on the volatility of the Trump administration, as shifts in capital and private market flows suggest U.S. exceptionalism is waning and losing out to a resurgent Europe. The numbers tell part of the story, with Europe’s Stoxx 600 up over 8% compared to a 5% jump for the S&P 500 since Nov. 1, 2024, just days ahead of the U.S. election.Bank of America said in a report dated June 5 that U.S. equities had seen outflows of $7.5 billion over the previous three weeks, while European stocks benefited from inflows of $2.6 billion over the same period. Earlier this year, meanwhile, data from Morningstar showed that investors withdrew 2.8 billion euros ($3.2 billion) from U.S. equity ETFs in the month to the middle of March, while shifting 14.6 billion euros into European ETFs.Goldman Sachs International Co-CEO Anthony Gutman told CNBC that the convergence in U.S. and European growth rates came about quickly this year and was a big factor prompting investors to shift money toward Europe.“In January, sentiment felt very strong in the U.S., it felt somewhat more muted in Europe. You roll the clock forward and now the picture has changed fairly dramatically, that’s to the benefit of Europe in many cases. Europe is getting more capital inflows and there is more optimism in Europe,” Gutman told CNBC’s Annette Weisbach Wednesday on the sidelines of the Goldman Sachs European Financials Conference in Berlin.Meanwhile, in private markets, talk of the breakdown of U.S. exceptionalism dominated the Super Return forum in Berlin last week. Carlyle Group’s Managing Director Mark Jenkins told CNBC that, “in Europe, we’ve seen a lot of great opportunity and think we can pick up greater returns here relative to the risk you’re taking in the U.S.”This sentiment was echoed by private equity giant Permira, which holds private equity funds and credit vehicles representing around 60 billion euros worth of capital under management.“If you look at Europe at the moment, firstly, capital is cheaper, if you look at the trend of where euro rates are going versus dollar rates are going, you can fund and finance things cheaper here. Secondly, valuations are cheaper, you can buy great companies for less,” Permira Executive Chairman Kurt Björklund told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Tuesday.“Thirdly the innovation cycle is growing exponentially in Europe ... there is an enormous number of highly innovative companies that are growing in a disruptive and global way,” he added.Trade tensions weighAll eyes are now on the potential for an EU-U.S. trade deal — which is proving trickier to pin down than with some other countries, including the U.K. Referencing the complexity of the behemoth that is the European Union, Siemens Energy Chairman Joe Kaeser told CNBC that the EU is “politically not ready to strike these types of deals.”The White House hinted on Wednesday that a July 9 deadline for a deal may be movable, however, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent saying: “It is highly likely that for those countries that are negotiating — or trading blocs, in the case of the EU — who are negotiating in good faith, we will roll the date forward to continue the good faith negotiation.”French President Emmanuel Macron also struck an optimistic tone, telling CNBC’s Karen Tso on Wednesday: “I’m sure that we will find, at the end of the day, a good solution.”Unicredit CEO Andrea Orcel stressed that the opportunity for Europe’s continued revival lies in its own hands, however. He explained that the 27-member European Union could galvanize amid the fracturing of Europe’s relationship with the U.S., but warned that investors can also be fickle. The expectation is that “there will be convergence, there will be a banking union, there will be a capital markets union. There will be a lot of spend on infrastructure, on defense... That’s exciting for the market, therefore money flowing in,” Orcel told CNBC Wednesday. “But if, little by little, investors realize that this is lip service, but it doesn’t really happen. Money will flow back in a nanosecond, and you will see [that] very quickly.”Europe is faced with a “phenomenal opportunity,” he added. “We have every reason to be ... on par with the U.S., but it’s our fault if we don’t do it.”

'I answered!' GOP senator snaps when pressed on Trump's $45M military parade

Nearly a dozen Republican senators reacted with visible discomfort Wednesday as they snapped, stared into space and retreated into elevators, rather than face questions about President Donald Trump's $45 million military parade, HuffPost reported.Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) wasn’t having it. “Nope,” he said when asked if he planned on attending the Saturday spectacle, which is set to include warplanes, tanks and a multimillion-dollar military parade on the National Mall. When pressed on the cost, the Indiana lawmaker pivoted.“I’m focused on the trillions right now, which is the reconciliation bill,” Young said. But when HuffPost pointed out he hadn’t answered the question, Young snapped: “I answered the question I wanted to answer!” Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) said she wouldn’t be in Washington, D.C., then gazed blankly into a Senate elevator as its doors closed after remarking, “But I wish I was.”Sen. Ted Budd (R-NC) stayed silent for eight seconds, grinned, and slipped into another elevator when asked his thoughts on the parade on Wednesday, HuffPost reported.“No comment,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) said. “No comment.” While Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) simply said she doesn’t “do hallway interviews.” HuffPost pointed out in its report Wednesday that “most conversations with the press happen in Senate hallways.”Saturday’s parade – an event that will honor both the Army’s 250th anniversary and Trump's own 79th birthday – will feature thousands of troops, tanks and aircraft rolling through the streets of D.C.. While Republicans have long railed against government waste, especially in the face of recent DOGE-related efforts, few in the GOP have publicly criticized the upcoming display.Only Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) spoke out among the group of 14 GOP senators the outlet spoke to – not just because of the steep price – but also because he doesn’t consider “the symbolism of tanks and missiles” to be representative of what the United States is all about.
