Archaeologists have long debated the origin of human symbolic behavior. The dominant idea was that only modern humans (Homo sapiens) were capable of complex symbolic thought and behavior; such as creating art, jewelry, or engaging in rituals. However, growing evidence suggests Neanderthals also developed symbolic behavior independently, around the same time.Continue ReadingCategory: ScienceTags: Archaeology, Evolution, Human, Fingerprint

A federal immigration spokesperson has blasted what an undocumented high school student said about his six days in custody at a Massachusetts facility as “blatant lies.”The spokesperson was reacting to comments made by Marcelo Gomes Da Silva since he was released on bond. The 18-year-old from Milford was taken into custody by immigration agents on his way to his school’s volleyball practice last month, and released amid outcry from elected officials and the community.Gomes Da Silva spoke extensively to reporters after his release, saying, “At the end of the day, this place, it’s not a good spot to be. Nobody should be in here.” He’s later spoken in interviews, telling NBC News he thinks it’s likely he’ll be able to stay in the U.S. — his visa expired when he was 7.But the Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson reiterated Sunday that Gomes Da Silva is in the country illegally, and said he “has peddled blatant lies regarding his treatment while in custody in Burlington.”The spokesperson, who gave the statement without giving their name, said that Gomes Da Silva got three meals a day, including “fresh catered sandwiches,” got “prompt off-site medical attention, despite no issues being identified,” and that the teenager thanked an officer and said, “everyone is so nice.”The statement also said that two members of Congress, Reps. Seth Moulton and Jake Auchincloss, toured the Burlington facility after Gomes Da Silva was released and had no concerns about it.However, both congressmen said the opposite to NBC10 Boston and other news outlets after their tour.“The facilities that Congressman Moulton and I saw are not facilities that anybody should be spending six days in,” Auchincloss said. “We know these officers are trying to uphold federal law and operate professionally, but they’re not being supported by this administration. Instead of working with Congress to resource it appropriately... he’s politicizing it, trying to sow fear amongst Americans.”“We spent quite a good deal of time,” Moulton said. “We went to the control center where they oversee the whole facility and asked to go in and see the cells where people are held. We saw a handful of cells, each one of them with a half dozen ore more people in them. They had the Mylar blankets that Marcelo described just to be able to keep warm or sleep in. There were no windows, it’s very difficult to even understand the time of day. I think they get one time a day where they’re able to make any phone calls, and Marcelo said there was not enough food. They were distributing food when we went in. As Jake said, it’s not conditions that anyone would want to live in for more than a few hours.”Asked about those comments, the ICE spokesperson said the agency addressed that in a prior statement and noted the Burlington facility was not intended to keep people long-term, but and that a court had ordered the agency not to move Gomes Da Silva out of the Burlington facility. His lawyers had sought the court order keeping Gomes Da Silva in Burlington, they’ve previously told NBC10 Boston, so as not to compromise his right to due process ahead of a hearing in Chelmsford.NBC10 Boston reached out to representatives for Auchincloss and Moulton, as well as to a lawyer for Gomes Da Silva.Moulton confirmed in a statement Sunday that he has concerns about holding people overnight at the Burlington facility.“Putting words in the mouths of federal lawmakers is nothing compared to detaining an 18 year-old for six days on a concrete floor without a window, so I guess that’s what we should expect,” he said. “As I said both before and after touring the facility, Burlington was designed for temporary holding and processing only, and it is grossly inappropriate for detaining anyone overnight, let alone an 18-year old honors student. Obviously ICE needs continued, aggressive oversight here and everywhere.”The 18-year-old was taken into custody, ICE reiterated Sunday, while looking for his father, also in the country without documentation, because he’d been reported to law enforcement for reckless driving, including reaching 100 mph in residential zones. The younger Gomes Da Silva told NBC News, “They could have at least thought a little bit harder to make up a lie.”Gomes Da Silva met with Gov. Maura Healey this week, and she said she gave the teenager a rosary blessed by the pope.Healey said in a statement, “even after ICE snatched him off the street with no notice and no explanation, even after six days in a detention center when he should have been in school, he told me: “I find beauty in humanity, that people always find optimism, even though they are in a horrible place.”Also Sunday, ICE released a statement from acting Director Todd Lyons reacting to recent comments by Healey and Mayor Michelle Wu — the agency didn’t specify which comments.“Politicians like Mayor Wu and Governor Healey have loudly touted lawlessness over law and order,” Lyons said. “Their prioritization of criminal aliens in communities across the state should speak volumes to their constituents. As these elected officials welcome those flouting national laws, ICE’s brave law enforcement officers protecting public safety will continue to perform the job they refuse to do.”Healey shared a new statement in reply on Sunday.“As a former Attorney General, public safety is always a top priority for me. ICE should be focusing on those with criminal backgrounds, like they said they were going to do. Instead, they’re doubling down on their arrest of Marcelo Gomes Da Silva, a high school student who came here when he was 6 years old, has been a model member of his community, and has no criminal record. It just doesn’t make sense and it doesn’t make anyone safer,” Healey said.More on Marcelo Gomes Da Silva's ICE detentionImmigrationJun 2ICE detained Mass. high school student while searching for his father, officials sayImmigrationJun 6Lawmakers denounce deplorable conditions at ICE facility where Milford teen was heldImmigrationJun 11‘I was in complete shock': Milford teen describes ICE arrest in exclusive interview

Cabin Crew Members Are Naming The Celebs Who Were Surprisingly Wonderful During Flights, And Some Are Kind Of Surprising BuzzFeed
Real Housewives' Lauren Miller has passed away following the birth of her newborn, Jackson.
The patients at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital were pleasantly surprised when Taylor Swift stopped by to say hi.The 35-year-old pop star visited the Hollywood, Florida, hospital on June 13, to spend time with patients and staff, taking pictures with them and giving them signed copies of a book.“You made this a day we’ll never shake off. Thank you, @taylorswift13 for bringing your support and kindness to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital,” the hospital’s official X account tweeted. “You turned hospital hallways into a place of joy, comfort, and connection.”pic.twitter.com/R1ARKYm43l— Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital (@JDCHospital) June 13, 2025 One video shared on the social media platform shows the superstar entering one young patient’s room, who looks visibly shocked as she says, “I’m Taylor, nice to meet you.”“What the?!” the patient named Zoe says, as Swift admires her nails.“Are you kidding me? That is beautiful. Is this like a cat eye?” she asks, with Zoe replying, “Yeah.”Swift then asks the young girl for a hug and says she hopes she feels better soon. The video ends with Zoe saying, “Holy cow, I just hugged Taylor Swift.”In another video, the patient is just as stunned to see the “Lover” singer entering their room“Hello,” Swift says, as the patient says, “Oh my god,” and covers their mouth.Complimenting the decorations in the room, she then introduces herself to someone off camera“Hey, how are you? I’m Taylor,” she says, with the patient quipping, “Yeah!”Excited, the two share an embrace before she asks the patient about their twin sister, who happens to be on FaceTime. The hospital also shared a number of photos from Swift’s visit, which show her with more patients and staff. The multi-Grammy-winning artist’s visit comes a day after she and boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce attended Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers. The two were photographed inside the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, cheering on the Panthers.Travis Kelce, left, and Taylor Swift react as the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers play during the first period in Game Four of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final at Amerant Bank Arena on June 12, 2025 in Sunrise, Florida. Clouds Over Bluesky: The Left's Social Media Safe Space Under Fire For Intolerant And Hateful Postings Authored by Jonathan Turley via jonathanturley.org,Bluesky has become a safe space for liberals seeking to avoid the triggering presence of opposing views since the Trump reelection. The relatively small site now has over 30 million followers (in comparison 260 million for X and 3 billion on Facebook). Now, however, users like billionaire Mark Cuban are complaining that Bluesky is just another intolerant echo chamber on the left and some are reportedly returning to X.Jaap Arriens / Sipa USA via APBillionaire Mark Cuban was one of the early champions of the site, writing “Hello Less Hateful World” in joining the site in November 2024.At the time, some of us criticized the premise of the Bluesky devotees. Many supported the anti-free speech and censorship efforts during the Biden Administration. Bluesky offered a replication of the echo chamber in higher education, where liberals can go unchallenged or uncontradicted. This included some of the most intolerant figures in media, academia, and the government. Now, Cuban and others are experiencing what many of us have lived through in higher education for years, an orthodox environment where even marginal disagreements are treated as litmus tests.Cuban this week decried that “Even if you agree with 95% of what a person is saying on a topic, if there is one point that you might call out as being more of a gray area, they will call you a fascist etc.”In his post on Monday, Cuban notes that “the replies on here may not be as racist as Twitter, but they damn sure are hateful. Talk AI: FU, AI sucks go away. Talk Business: Go away. Talk Healthcare: Crickets.”“Because the Musk and Trump haters are the largest and most passionate group, the result is something of an echo chamber where it’s hard to get positive engagement unless you’re saying things progressives want to hear — and where the negative engagement on things they don’t want to hear can be intense.”The problem is that many users went to Bluesky because they did not want to be challenged in a free-speech environment. It is a site for those who do not wish to be “triggered” by opposing views. If you only watch MSNBC and post on Bluesky, you can live within a hermetically sealed liberal space without the fear of contradiction or opposition.Ultimately, 30 million users are not a significant threat to social media companies like X or Facebook. The hope that Bluesky would drain X of revenue has not materialized. Analysts are reporting that X appears to be rebounding after years of boycotts and ad revenue could grow by 17.5% to $1.31 billion, with global ad sales expected to rise by 16.5% to $2.26 billion.Bluesky will still be able to capitalize off the draw as a safe space draw for the left with uniformly favorable media coverage. It also offers a concentrated membership of liberal users for Democratic politicians and pundits. However, it does little in terms of impact outside of that space. That is the reason why most liberal politicians and pundits are still actively posting on X. Some belong to both — engaging a broader audience on issues on X while retreating to the safe space of Bluesky for reaffirmation. However, it is harmful to the left in further insulating themselves from reality. Take a typical user like a Harvard professor who watches MSNBC and reads the New York Times. She then goes to work at a university with a faculty that has less than three percent of conservatives or Republicans and less than ten percent conservative or Republican students. She then goes to Bluesky to converse within a liberal ecosystem on social media. It is a virtual bio-containment tent that filters out any discordant elements. The reason that many on the left were shocked by the election results is that they lived within these protected spaces. They have removed themselves further from the majority of this country, disengaging with anyone who objects to their priorities and values. Within that echo chamber, opposing views become more intolerable and shocking.Bluesky will continue to be a draw for free-speech-phobic and viewpoint-intolerant users. Fortunately, most people want to be part of a larger discourse and engage with the world around them, despite the presence of trolls and hateful commentators.Cuban’s call for greater diversity of thought on Bluesky is unlikely to alter the culture of a site that is maintained as a safe space for liberals. That cloistered environment only increases sensitivity and intolerance for opposing views. It is akin to developing an immune deficiency from a lack of exposure to certain elements. If Cuban and others want robust debate, they will not find it in digital safe spaces like Bluesky. This is a spoiler-free preview of the first five episodes of season three.Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ended its second season with arguably the single strongest run of any streaming-era Trek. The show was made with such confidence in all departments that if there were flaws, you weren’t interested in looking for them. Since then, it’s gone from being the best modern Trek, to being the only modern Trek. Unfortunately, at the moment it needs to be the standard bearer for the show, it’s become noticeably weaker and less consistent. As usual, I’ve seen the first five episodes, but can’t reveal specifics about what I’ve seen. I can say plenty of the things that made Strange New Worlds the best modern-day live-action Trek remain in place. It’s a show that’s happy for you to spend time with its characters as they hang out, and almost all of them are deeply charming. This is, after all, a show that uses as motif the image of the crew in Pike’s quarters as the captain cooks for his crew. Its format, with standalone adventures blended with serialized character drama, means it can offer something new every week. Think back to the first season, when “Memento Mori,” a tense action thriller with the Gorn, was immediately followed by “Spock Amock,” a goofy, starbase-set body-swap romantic comedy of manners centered around Spock. Strange New Worlds is the first Trek in a long while to realize audiences don’t just want a ceaseless slog of stern-faced, angry grimdark. And if they want that, they can go watch Picard and Section 31.Marni Grossman/Paramount+But, as much as those things are SNW’s greatest strength, it’s a delicate balance to ensure the series doesn’t lurch too far either way. And, it pains me to say this, the show spends the first five episodes of its third season going too far in both directions (although, mercifully, not at the same time). No specifics, but one episode I’m sure was on the same writers room whiteboard wishlist as last season’s musical episode. What was clearly intended as a chance for everyone to get out of their usual roles and have fun falls flat. Because the episode can never get past the sense it’s too delighted in its own silliness to properly function.Marni Grossman/Paramount+At the other end of the scale, we get sprints toward the eye-gouging grimdark that blighted those other series. Sure, the series has gone to dark places before, but previously with more of a sense of deftness, rather than just going for the viscerally-upsetting gore. A cynic might suggest that, as Paramount’s other Trek projects ended, franchise-overseer Alex Kurtzman — who has pushed the franchise into “grittier” territory whenever he can — had more time to spend in the SNW writers’ room.Much as I’ve enjoyed the series’ soapier elements, the continuing plotlines take up an ever bigger part of each episode’s runtime so far. Consequently, the story of the week gets less service, making them feel weaker and less coherent. One episode pivots two thirds of the way in to act as a low-key sequel to an episode from season two. But since we’ve only got ten minutes left, it feels thrown in as an afterthought, or to resolve a thread the creative team felt they were obliged to deal with (they didn’t).In fact, this and the recently-finished run of Doctor Who suffered from the same problem that blights so many streaming-era shows, which is the limited episode order. Rather than producing TV on the scale broadcast networks were able to — yearly runs of 22-, 24- or 26 episodes, a lot of (expensive) genre shows get less than half that. The result is that each episode has to be More Important Than The Last One in a way that’s exhausting for a viewer. But Strange New Worlds can’t solve all the economic issues with the streaming model on its own. My hope is that, much like in its first season, the weaker episodes are all in its front half to soften us up for the moments of quality that followed toward its conclusion.ASIDE: Shortly before publication, Paramount announced Strange New Worlds would end in its fifth season, which would be cut from ten episodes to six. It's not surprising — given the equally-brilliant Lower Decks was also axed after passing the same milestone — but it is disappointing. My only hope is that the series doesn't spend that final run awkwardly killing off the series' young ensemble one by one in order to replace them with the entire original series' roster as to make it "line up." Please, let them be their own things. AI disruption is “unnerving investors in every industry, and it’s totally disrupting our business,” WPP’s outgoing boss Mark Read told CNBC. The advertising market is under threat from emerging generative AI tools that can be used to generate pieces of content at rapid pace. The advertising industry is undergoing a “huge transformation” due to AI’s disruptive effects, according to Publicis Groupe CEO Maurice Levy.Artificial intelligence is shaking up the advertising business and “unnerving” investors, one industry leader told CNBC.“I think this AI disruption ... unnerving investors in every industry, and it’s totally disrupting our business,” Mark Read, the outgoing CEO of British advertising group WPP, told CNBC’s Karen Tso on Tuesday. The advertising market is under threat from emerging generative AI tools that can be used to materialize pieces of content at rapid pace. The past couple of years has seen the rise of a number of AI image generators, including OpenAI’s DALL-E, Google’s Veo and Midjourney. In his first interview since announcing he would step down as WPP boss, Read said that AI is “going to totally revolutionize our business.”“AI is going to make all the world’s expertise available to everybody at extremely low cost,” he said at London Tech Week. “The best lawyer, the best psychologist, the best radiologist, the best accountant, and indeed, the best advertising creatives and marketing people often will be an AI, you know, will be driven by AI.”Read said that 50,000 WPP employees now use WPP Open, the company’s own AI-powered marketing platform.“That, I think, is my legacy in many ways,” he added.Structural pressure on creative parts of the ad business are driving industry consolidation, Read also noted, adding that companies would need to “embrace” the way in which AI would impact everything from creating briefs and media plans to optimizing campaigns.A report from Forrester released in June last year showed that more than 60% of U.S. ad agencies are already making use of generative AI, with a further 31% saying they’re exploring use cases for the technology.‘Huge transformation’Read is not alone in this view. Advertising is undergoing a “huge transformation” due to the disruptive effects of AI, French advertising giant Publicis Groupe’s CEO Maurice Levy told CNBC at the Viva Tech conference in Paris. He noted that AI image and video generation tools are speeding up content production drastically, while automated messaging systems can now achieve “personalization at scale like never before.” Small retailers on ‘vacation from hell’ as they seek clarity on Trump’s China tariffsChime’s IPO will test public market appetite for fintech as companies line up to exitDisney and Universal sue AI image company Midjourney for unlicensed use of Star Wars, The Simpsons and moreNvidia CEO says quantum computing is reaching an ‘inflection point’However, the Publicis chief stressed that AI should only be considered a tool that people can use to augment their lives.“We should not believe that AI is more than a tool,” he added. And while AI is likely to impact some jobs, Levy ultimately thinks it will create more roles than it destroys.“Will AI replace me, and will AI kill some jobs? I think that AI, yes, will destroy some jobs,” Levy conceded. However, he added that, “more importantly, AI will transform jobs and will create more jobs. So the net balance will be probably positive.”This, he says, would be in keeping with the labor impacts of previous technological inventions like the internet and smartphones.“There will be more autonomous work,” Levy added.Still, Nicole Denman Greene, analyst at Gartner, warns brands should be wary of causing a negative reaction from consumers who are skeptical of AI’s impact on human creativity.According to a Gartner survey from September, 82% of consumers said firms using generative AI should prioritize preserving human jobs, even if it means lower profits.“Pivot from what AI can do to what it should do in advertising,” Greene told CNBC.“What it should do is help create groundbreaking insights, unique execution to reach diverse and niche audiences, push boundaries on what ‘marketing’ is and deliver more brand differentiated, helpful and relevant personalized experiences, including deliver on the promise of hyper-personalization.”
