Sony Electronics Rolls Out High-Resolution Shotgun Microphone, ECM-778

Sony Electronics is adding the ECM-778 shotgun microphone to its lineup of professional audio solutions. The premium new model is designed for content production where audio quality is paramount, such as films, dramas, and documentaries. The flagship mono high-resolution microphone delivers immersive, high-quality audio recordings. The microphone offers versatile mounting options and can be fixed to a boom pole by using the supplied microphone holder and stand adapter, attached to compatible cameras, or used in studio setups, adapting easily to various audio recording environments requiring cinematic sound.Premium Craftsmanship for Targeted Sound CaptureThe ECM-778 features a newly developed microphone capsule, a precision-machined brass acoustic tube, and a specifically designed electronic circuit board for superior sound quality, providing clear high frequencies and stable mid-low ranges. With high-resolution support capturing frequencies beyond the audible range of 20 kHz, the microphone provides clear and spatially expansive audio recording of voices, ambient sounds, nature sounds, musical instruments, and more.Compact Build for Ease of UseWith a compact size of approximately 6.93 inches (176 mm) in length and weight of roughly 3.6 ounces (102 g), the ECM-778 achieves excellent forward directivity and clearly captures desired sound while effectively reducing surrounding noise, providing greater user flexibility when recording in confined spaces. In a boom setup, the size of the microphone offers excellent mobility, allowing for closer positioning to performers for clearer sound capture. Its lightweight machined aluminum exterior is also a benefit when mounted on top of cameras, promoting operability, mobility and minimizing intrusion.Broad CompatibilityThe microphone provides seamless compatibility with external audio input devices, recording equipment, and camera systems equipped with XLR terminals, including Sony’s Cinema Line and Alpha mirrorless interchangeable lens camerasii, thereby supporting a wide range of video production and audio recording environments.Consistent, Precise Sound QualityFilm capacitors and metal film resistors are used in the signal path to achieve clear sound quality. Conductive polymer aluminium solid capacitors in the power circuit combine miniaturization with high capacity to ensure a stable power supply. Additionally, the machined aluminum exterior suppresses external vibrations and electrical noise, enabling high-precision audio recording.Durability, Reliability, and VersatilityThe microphone’s robust machined aluminum exterior and structure support reliable and stable professional performance under various conditions. The microphone also comes with two lightweight foam-type wind screens, which offer superior wind protection indoors or in the elements, ensuring options for differing use cases and environments. Additionally, all the microphones’ accessories – including wind screens – can be neatly stored in the durable hard-sided case, which is included with the microphone.A low-cut switch reduces unwanted bass noise, as well as wind and vibration, further enabling clear, easy to hear audio.Collaboration with Film Sound EngineersDuring the development and design of the ECM-778, Sony continues to collaborate with sound engineers in film production to create purpose-built products that incorporate professional feedback and directly address industry needs.“We recording engineers forge our sonic preferences over years, recording and listening to countless projects with a vast array of microphones, starting from our days as assistants," says Kenichi Fujimoto, Sound Engineer and winner of the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Sound Recording (2012, 2015). "When we step into the lead role, we choose the mic that perfectly matches our cultivated taste. Right now, this is the single best choice available. In filmmaking, the shotgun mic for dialogue is the most critical tool—it's the axis around which everything else turns. The ECM-778 is that new axis. It strikes an exceptional balance with its length and weight. Its clarity and solid core deliver a palpable sound pressure, and it provides that 'little something' that has always been missing in other microphones. It is, simply put, a microphone that lets you create a truly cinematic sound.”Pricing and AvailabilityThe ECM-778 microphone is expected to be available near the end of summer 2025 for approximately $1,199.99. It will be sold directly through Sony and at a variety of Sony’s authorized dealers throughout North America.

Olivia Munn's mother diagnosed with breast cancer after actor's own cancer diagnosis

Olivia Munn shared on Wednesday that her mother was diagnosed with and underwent treatment for breast cancer, revealing the news more than a year after the actor announced her own diagnosis.Munn wrote in an Instagram post that after her own breast cancer diagnosis, she encouraged her mother, Kim Munn, to take a lifetime breast cancer risk assessment. It’s the same test that Munn’s own doctor encouraged her to take which led to a score that prompted an MRI test, and ultimately a biopsy.“The Newsroom” actor was found to have Luminal B cancer in both breasts in 2023, she said last year. Her mother had a score of 26.2%, and although mammograms came out fine, Munn wrote that she insisted her mother get an MRI.“Shortly after that MRI, my mother was diagnosed with Stage 1 Her2 breast cancer,” Munn wrote. “She has since completed 12 rounds of chemo and will continue monthly Herceptin transfusions until this fall.”Her2 breast cancer is a fast-growing and invasive form of the disease, according to the Cleveland Clinic.Munn shared that her mother had a double mastectomy, a surgery that Munn also had when she was diagnosed. The actor encourage everyone to take the free, online risk assessment that she credits with saving her and her mother’s lives.“Anything above 20% is considered high risk for breast cancer and you should insist that your doctor order a breast MRI,” Munn wrote.Munn added that her mother wanted to say that she hopes sharing her story will help save someone’s life.“I want to say how proud I am of my mom,” Munn wrote. “She’s handled all of this with bravery and humor while still driving us crazy (just days after her double mastectomy she tried to do laundry and make dinner — she’s insane.)”Munn’s post included video of her mother making fried green tomatoes days after surgery, joking that Munn won’t get any if she isn’t nice.“I want you to go sit down and rest,” Munn said in the video.“I will, after I finish this one,” her mother said. “Leave me alone.”She also shared video of her mother ringing a bell to indicate she finished her last round of chemo, cheering with hospital staff who held signs. This story first appeared on NBCNews.com. IKEA goes all in on Matter with new smart home products

IKEA continues its push into the smart home category with a new line of Matter-compatible products, set to launch in January. The ready-to-assemble furniture conglomerate has been testing the waters with smart home products for a while now, but this is its largest release in the space yet.Beyond stating consumers could expect 20 new products running the open source Matter standard, zero specifics were provided on which items will launch next year. "Bringing Matter to our products means we are taking a big step in the right direction, offering compatibility across brands, and lowering the threshold for people to get started," said David Granath, range manager at IKEA.In the meantime, IKEA is teasing two new Bluetooth speakers that will launch later this year. An affordable speaker designed to look like an old radio will launch in July under the name NATTBAD, and a table speaker named BLOMPRAKT with atmospheric lighting is coming in October.Technical details are sparse, but the announcement describes support for features like multi-speaker setup and Spotify Tap. This would mark the first introduction of new speakers from IKEA since the company ended its partnership with Sonos earlier this summer.IKEA says more updates about the new range of smart home products will come ahead of the January launch. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/home/smart-home/ikea-goes-all-in-on-matter-with-new-smart-home-products-144232740.html?src=rss

Steam Has A New Best-Rated Game Of All Time

Sorry, Valve, but it seems that you aren't the top dog on your own storefront anymore, at least when it comes to having the highest-rated game on Steam anyway. For a long while Portal 2 has gone unchallenged in its top-rated spot on Steam, but as tracked by Steam Top 250, none other than Stardew Valley has moved above it. Mind, the difference in rating is quite minimal, but nonetheless Eric "ConceredApe" Barone's beloved farming sim is currently the highest-rated game on Steam. It's probably worth noting that Steam Top 250 explains that the scores assigned to each game are based on two things: number of votes, and the approval rating, i.e. percentage, of positive votes. Stardew Valley has just under 900,000 votes, more than double the amount of votes that Portal 2 has, 436,665. The former technically has a one percent lower count of positive votes compared to the latter, but it's that ratio of positive votes to overall votes that has net Stardew Valley the top spot.Interestingly, when looking at the top 10 highest-rated games across Steam, most of them have been around for at least a few years, if not a lot longer, like Hades, Vampire Survivors, Left 4 Dead 2, and the original Portal. But Schedule 1 is also there in ninth place, a game that only just launched in early access in March of this year.A big new update did arrive in Stardew Valley last year, and while Barone hasn't ruled out making a Stardew Valley 2 eventually, right now he's back to working on his follow-up Haunted Chocolatier. Last month he said Haunted Chocolatier will have a bigger world than Stardew Valley, and considering how long ago it was announced, you can probably expect to continue waiting a while longer for it.

Finding PBHs Using The LSST Will Be A Statistical Challenge

With the recent first light milestone for the Vera Rubin observatory, it's only a matter of time before one of astronomy’s most long-awaited surveys begins. The Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) is set to start on November 5th, and will scan the sky of billions of stars for at least ten years. One of the most important things it hopes to find is evidence (or lack thereof) of primordial black holes (PBHs), one of the primary candidates for dark matter. A new paper from researchers at Durham University and the University of New Mexico looks at the difficulties the LSST will have in finding those enigmatic objects, especially the statistical challenges, and how they might be overcome.

UBS analysts warn that emerging market (EM) equities may be underestimating the impact of rising U.S. tariffs. Over 35% of MSCI EM revenues come from exports, with 13% tied to the U.S., leaving them vulnerable as reciprocal tariffs take effect. UBS estimates the current average U.S. tariff rate of 16% could climb to 21%—up sharply from just 2.4% in 2024—if earlier tariff levels are fully reinstated.UBS's stress tests suggest tariffs and related economic slowdown could cut EM earnings by 6–9%, yet earnings forecasts have only been trimmed by 3% in recent months. As more downgrades come through, UBS expects this will weigh on EM equity performance going forward.---Earlier:J.P. Luzerne County solicitor: Job Corps lease renewal a ‘good thing’

WILKES-BARRE — The U.S. Department of Labor renewal of a lease to operate the Keystone Job Corps Center on Luzerne County property in Butler Twp. is a “good thing,” county Solicitor Harry Skene said Tuesday at a county council meeting. “And the good thing is it costs about a million dollars a year to maintain that property,” Skene explained. “So it’s good that they want to renew it because then they’ll be responsible for upkeep of the property.” In May, the U.S. Department of Labor announced the closure of all 99 Job Corps centers across the nation by June 30. New 'Mind-Reading' AI Predicts What Humans Will Do Next

New 'Mind-Reading' AI Predicts What Humans Will Do Next Via StudyFinds,MUNICH — An artificial intelligence system can now predict your next move before you make it. We’re not just talking about whether you’ll click “buy now” on that Amazon cart, but rather how you’ll navigate complex decisions, learn new skills, or explore uncharted territory.(Image by metamorworks via Shutterstock)Researchers have developed an AI called Centaur that accurately predicts human behavior across virtually any psychological experiment. It even outperforms the specialized computer models scientists have been using for decades. Trained on data from more than 60,000 people making over 10 million decisions, Centaur captures the underlying patterns of how we think, learn, and make choices.“The human mind is remarkably general,” the researchers write in their paper, published in Nature. “Not only do we routinely make mundane decisions, such as choosing a breakfast cereal or selecting an outfit, but we also tackle complex challenges, such as figuring out how to cure cancer or explore outer space.”An AI that truly understands human cognition could revolutionize marketing, education, mental health treatment, and product design. But it also raises uncomfortable questions about privacy and manipulation when our digital footprints reveal more about us than ever before. How Scientists Built a Digital Mind Reader AIThe research team started with an ambitious goal: create a single AI model that could predict human behavior in any psychological experiment. Their approach was surprisingly straightforward but required massive scale.Scientists assembled a dataset called Psych-101 containing 160 experiments covering memory tests, learning games, risk-taking scenarios, and moral dilemmas. Each experiment was converted into plain English descriptions that an AI could understand.Rather than building from scratch, researchers took Meta’s Llama 3.1 language model (the same type powering ChatGPT) and gave it specialized training on human behavior. They used a technique that allows them to modify only a tiny fraction of the AI’s programming while keeping most of it unchanged. The entire training process took only five days on a high-end computer processor.Centaur could mark a new turning point in AI in its unprecedented ability to understand the human mind. (Image by Shutterstock AI Generator)Centaur Dominates Traditional Cognitive ModelsWhen tested, Centaur completely crushed the competition. In head-to-head comparisons with specialized cognitive models that scientists spent decades perfecting, Centaur won in almost every single experiment. The real breakthrough came when researchers tested Centaur on completely new scenarios. The AI successfully predicted human behavior even when the experiment’s story changed (turning a space treasure hunt into a magic carpet adventure), when the structure was modified (adding a third option to a two-choice task), and when entirely new domains were introduced (logical reasoning tests that weren’t in its training data).Centaur could also generate realistic human-like behavior when running simulations. In one test involving exploration strategies, the AI achieved performance comparable to actual human participants and showed the same type of uncertainty-guided decision-making that characterizes how people behave.Neural Alignment: Centaur Mimics Human Brain ActivityIn a surprising discovery, Centaur’s internal workings had become more aligned with human brain activity, even though it was never explicitly trained to match neural data. When researchers compared the AI’s internal states to brain scans of people performing the same tasks, they found stronger correlations than with the original, untrained model.Learning to predict human behavior apparently forced the AI to develop internal representations that mirror how our brains actually process information. The AI essentially reverse-engineered aspects of human cognition just by studying our choices. The team also demonstrated how Centaur could accelerate scientific discovery. They used the AI to analyze human behavior patterns, leading to the discovery of a new decision-making strategy that outperformed existing psychological theories.“We’ve created a tool that allows us to predict human behavior in any situation described in natural language – like a virtual laboratory,” says lead author Marcel Binz in a statement. What’s Next for Human Behavior AI?While impressive, this research represents just the beginning. The current version focuses primarily on learning and decision-making, with limited coverage of areas like social psychology or cross-cultural differences. The dataset also skews toward Western, educated populations, a common limitation in psychological research. The team plans to expand their dataset to include more diverse domains and populations, envisioning a comprehensive model that could serve as a unified theory of human cognition. They’ve made both their dataset and AI model publicly available for other researchers to build upon.“We combine AI research with psychological theory – and with a clear ethical commitment,” adds Binz. “In a public research environment, we have the freedom to pursue fundamental cognitive questions that are often not the focus in industry.”For the first time, we have an artificial system that can predict human behavior across the full spectrum of psychological research with unprecedented accuracy. Whether that development excites or concerns you may depend on how confidently we can ensure such tools are used responsibly.Paper SummaryMethodologyThe researchers created Centaur by fine-tuning Meta’s Llama 3.1 70B language model on a dataset called Psych-101, which contains trial-by-trial behavioral data from 160 psychological experiments involving over 60,000 participants making more than 10 million choices. They converted all experiments into natural language format and used a parameter-efficient training technique called QLoRA that modified only 0.15% of the model’s parameters. The training focused specifically on predicting human responses while masking out other parts of the experimental instructions.ResultsCentaur outperformed existing domain-specific cognitive models in almost every experiment when predicting behavior of held-out participants. The AI also successfully generalized to modified cover stories, structural task changes, and entirely new domains like logical reasoning. In open-loop simulations, Centaur generated realistic human-like behavior patterns and achieved comparable performance to actual humans in exploration tasks. Additionally, the model’s internal representations became more aligned with human neural activity compared to the base model.LimitationsThe current dataset focuses primarily on learning and decision-making domains, with limited coverage of social psychology, cross-cultural studies, and individual differences. The participant pool skews toward Western, educated populations typical of psychological research. The natural language format also introduces selection bias against experiments that cannot be easily expressed in text, and the researchers note the need for eventual expansion to multimodal data formats.Funding and DisclosuresResearch was supported by the Max Planck Society, the Humboldt Foundation, the Volkswagen Foundation, and the NOMIS Foundation. One author has consulting relationships and ownership interests in several biotech companies. The researchers have made their dataset and model publicly available for scientific use.Publication Information“A foundation model to predict and capture human cognition” was published in Nature on July 2, 2025. The study was led by Marcel Binz at the Institute for Human-Centered AI, Helmholtz Center Munich, with collaborators from institutions including Princeton University, University of Tübingen, Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, and others. ‘The time is now': Boston city councilor calls for a WNBA franchise in the city

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford has agreed to pay a $2.4 million settlement to a man who says he was sexually abused by a priest more than 100 times over a five-year period, beginning in the 1980s.The victim, who was an altar boy at St. Adalbert’s School in Enfield, alleges the abuse occurred between 1985 and 1990. His attorney, Mitchell Garabedian, said the boy was repeatedly taken out of class to serve at funerals, where the abuse would take place.“My client was an altar server, an altar boy, and he would be taken out of class to go serve a funeral, for instance,” Garabedian said. “Someone should have noticed my client was gone for a long amount of time. After the service, my client would be abused.”The accused priest, Adolph Renkiewicz, allegedly sexually assaulted the victim dozens of times. In a statement, the archdiocese said it “continues to apologize and work with victims of clergy sexual abuse and their families to bring them lasting healing.”The Archdiocese also said the archbishop and his staff are “committed to doing all that is humanly possible to ensure that this never happens again and that our churches are safe places for children and families at all times.”The settlement is part of a broader reckoning within the catholic church over decades of abuse allegations and institutional failures to protect children.
