Men the Trump administration sent to El Salvador megaprison freed in prisoner swap

More than 200 Venezuelan immigrants whom the Trump administration had sent to a notorious mega-prison in El Salvador have been flown to Venezuela, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele said in a post on X.The move was part of a prisoner swap in which the Venezuelan government released “a considerable number of Venezuelan political prisoners ... as well as all the American citizens it was holding as hostages,” Bukele said, in exchange for the Venezuelan nationals who had been imprisoned in El Salvador. In a post of his own, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday, “Thanks to @POTUS’s leadership, ten Americans who were detained in Venezuela are on their way to freedom.” The U.S. nationals were back in the U.S. as of Saturday night, according to a U.S. official. They are Wilbert Joseph Castaneda, Jorge Marcelo Vargas, Lucas Hunter, Jonathan Pagan Gonzalez, Ronald Oribio Quintana, Erick Oribio Quintana, Fabian Buglione Reyes, Renzo Humanchumo Castillo, Juan Jose Faria Bricen and Danud Hanid Ortiz, according to another U.S. official.Rubio also praised Bukele for “helping secure an agreement for the release of all of our American detainees, plus the release of Venezuelan political prisoners.”The Venezuelan immigrants were deported from the U.S. under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, a rarely employed wartime law. The Trump administration has declared a Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, an invading force, and used the act to deport Venezuelan immigrants who it says have ties to the gang. More than 200 men — some of them asylum-seekers who said they were at risk of persecution in Venezuela — were sent to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT, in March. Family members of several men believed to be held there have denied they had ties to the gang. They have pleaded for the men to be released from El Salvador’s prison system, which is known for human rights abuses, and returned to Venezuela. In a video provided by the Salvadoran government on Friday, several Venezuelan men can be seen leaving a charter bus with their hands zip-tied as they walk past a line of national police guards and into a plane set to take them back to their home country. Two of the men could be heard hurling expletives as they were loaded on to the plane.“Damn dogs, all of you,” one man, who also gave a middle finger to the camera, said in Spanish.Venezuelan Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace Diosdado Cabello, said the government there would continue to try to bring home Venezuelans imprisoned in the U.S. and El Salvador. “We will keep demanding the return of all the Venezuelans kidnapped by the government of the United States, kidnapped by the government of El Salvador,” Cabello said in televised remarks. “All of them, we demand that they return them to our country. To their home country.” A senior administration official said the swap was “down to the wire.”“We’re dealing with a regime in which, you know, there’s always a degree of uncertainty on their side, a degree of uncertainty from our side and things that you would normally expect to move in in a normal way tend to not move in a normal way,” the official said. “The United States continues to support the restoration of democracy in Venezuela and calls for the release of all the remaining political prisoners,” they added. The American Civil Liberties Union, which sued the administration over its use of the Alien Enemies Act in March, told NBC News it had not been told about the CECOT detainees’ release before it happened. Responding to reporting from Reuters earlier Friday about the prisoner swap agreement, the ACLU’s Lee Gelernt, the lead counsel in the litigation, criticized the Trump Administration.“The government allowed these individuals to languish in a notorious gulag for more than four months with zero due process and, with this latest maneuver, appears to be trying to avoid all court rulings,” Gelernt said.He added, “Whether these individuals are in El Salvador or Venezuela, the use of the Alien Enemies Act by our government during peacetime was illegal. Period!”As news of the prisoner exchange spread, the family members of men suspected of being held in CECOT said they were anxiously waiting for the plane carrying the prisoners to land in Venezuela.Ringniber Rincon, the 18-year-old daughter of suspected detainee Ringo Rincón, told NBC News that she and her two siblings were eager for their father to return to their hometown of Maracaibo.Rincon wrote that she was “anxious to know more about my dad and know how he is as he is coming out of four horrible months.” But she added that she was hopeful, “he is coming here and I will be with him again.”Monica Alba and Abigail Williams contributed.

iOS 26 Public Beta Expected This Week as First iOS 27 Rumor Surfaces

The first iOS 26 public beta should arrive this week, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman."All indications are that iOS 26 should go into the public beta phase this coming week," said Gurman, in his Power On newsletter today. In a social media post last week, Gurman said that the iOS 26 public beta would likely be released on or around Wednesday, July 23.Apple previously announced that a public beta of iOS 26 would be available in July, but it did not provide a more specific timeframe. The first public betas of iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, watchOS 26, and HomePod software 26 should be released alongside the iOS 26 public beta, and Apple is also planning to offer a public beta of its next major AirPods firmware update for the first time. Apple does not plan to offer a visionOS 26 public beta, though, according to its beta website.Anyone can sign up to be a member of the Apple Beta Software Program, for free, and gain access to the public betas for testing. As always, we highly recommend backing up your devices before installing beta software, in case of issues. All of the updates are already available in developer beta. A few years ago, Apple dropped the requirement to pay $99 per year for an Apple Developer Program membership in order to access the developer betas, but you still need to have an Apple Developer account. Technically, though, the public should wait for the public betas.Looking ahead, the first iOS 27 rumor has surfaced.According to Gurman, Apple will formally kick off development of iOS 27 soon, and the company plans to prioritize software features that are tailored for the long-rumored foldable iPhone. That device is expected to launch in the second half of next year.Related Roundups: iOS 26, iPadOS 26Tags: iOS 27, Mark GurmanRelated Forum: iOS 26This article, "iOS 26 Public Beta Expected This Week as First iOS 27 Rumor Surfaces" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

‘Superman' flexes its might in second weekend with $57.3 million

James Gunn’s “Superman” showed staying power in its second weekend at North American box offices, collecting $57.3 million in ticket sales and remaining the No. 1 movie in cinemas, according to studio estimates Sunday.None of the week’s new releases — “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” “Smurfs,” and “Eddington” — came close to touching Warner Bros. and DC Studios’ superhero success. “Superman” dipped 54% from its domestic opening, an average decline for a big summer film.In two weeks, “Superman” has grossed $406.8 million worldwide, a good start for the movie DC Studios is banking on to restart its movie operations. A big test looms next weekend, when the Walt Disney Co. releases Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.”Strong audience scores and good reviews should help propel the $225 million-budgeted “Superman” toward profitability in the coming weeks. For Warner Bros. and DC Studios, “Superman” is key to kicking off a 10-year plan for the comic book adaptation studio. Co-heads Gunn and Peter Safra were tasked with rehabilitating the flagging operation. Next on tap are the films “Supergirl” and “Clayface” in 2026.But “Superman” is far from flying solo in theaters right now. Universal Pictures’ “Jurassic World: Rebirth” came in second this weekend, with $23.4 million in its third week of release. The seventh “Jurassic” movie, this one starring Scarlett Johansson, held its own despite the competition from “Superman.” In three weeks, it accrued $648 million worldwide.Apple Studios and Warner Bros.’ “F1: The Movie” has also shown legs, especially internationally. In its fourth weekend, the Brad Pitt racing drama dipped just 26% domestically, bringing in $9.6 million in North America, and another $29.5 million overseas. Its global total stands at $460.8 million. But both of the biggest new releases — Sony Pictures’ “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and Paramount Pictures’ “Smurfs” — fell flat.Movies13 hours agoJames Gunn recalls how he broke the ‘Superman' recasting news to Henry CavillMoviesJul 16‘Look Out': James Gunn reveals first poster for Milly Alcock's ‘Supergirl' movieMoviesJul 9‘Superman' brings a message of hope to a cynical world“I Know What You Did Last Summer” opened with $13 million, a fair result for a movie budgeted at a modest $18 million, but a disappointing opening for a well-known horror franchise. The film, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, is set 27 years after the 1997 original. Teenagers played by Madelyn Cline and Chase Sui Wonders are again haunted for covering up a car accident. The movie’s reviews (38% “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes) were poor for “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and audiences graded it similarly. The film notched a “C+” on CinemaScore. The original collected $72.6 million in its domestic run in 1997. Paramount Pictures’ “Smurfs” debuted in fourth place this weekend with $11 million. The latest big-screen reboot for the woodland blue creatures prominently features Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette. But reviews (21% “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes) were terrible. Audiences were kinder, giving it a “B+” on CinemaScore, but the $58 million-budgeted release will depend largely on its international sales. In 56 overseas markets, “Smurfs” earned $22.6 million. Ari Aster’s “Eddington” opened with $4.2 million on 2,111 screens for A24. Since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, “Eddington” has been particularly divisive. The pandemic-set Western features Joaquin Phoenix as the right-wing sheriff of a small New Mexico town who faces off with its liberal mayor (Pedro Pascal). While Aster’s first film, 2018’s “Heredity” ($82.8 million worldwide against a $10 million budget) helped establish A24 as an indie powerhouse, but the less-than-stellar launch of “Eddington” marks the second box-office disappointment for Aster. His 2023 film “Beau Is Afraid” cost $35 million to make but collected just $12.4 million worldwide. “Eddington” cost about $25 million to produce. Audiences gave it a “C+” on CinemaScore. None of Aster’s previous films have been graded higher.Yet collectively, Hollywood is enjoying a very good summer. According to data firm Comscore, the 2025 summer box office is up 15.9% over the same period last year, with the year-to-date sales running 15% ahead of 2025. Summer ticket sales have amassed about $2.6 billion domestically, according to Comscore.Top 10 movies by domestic box officeWith final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore:1. “Superman,” $57.3 million.2. “Jurassic World Rebirth,” $23.4 million.3. “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” $13 million.4. “Smurfs,” $11 million.5, “F1: The Movie,” $9.6 million.6. “How to Train Your Dragon,” $5.4 million.7. “Eddington,” $4.3 million.8. “Elio,” $2 million.9. “Lilo & Stitch,” $1.5 million.10. “28 Years Later,” $1.3 million.

Rabi-like splitting arises from nonlinear interactions between magnons in synthetic antiferromagnet

Synthetic antiferromagnets are carefully engineered magnetic materials made up of alternating ferromagnetic layers with oppositely aligned magnetic moments, separated by a non-magnetic spacer. These materials can display interesting magnetization patterns, characterized by swift changes in the behavior of magnetic moments in response to external forces, such as radio frequency (RF) currents.

US Revokes Visas For Brazilian Judge, His Allies Over Bolsonaro Prosecution

US Revokes Visas For Brazilian Judge, His Allies Over Bolsonaro Prosecution U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced late Friday that he has revoked the visas of Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, his “allies on the court,” and their close relatives, citing an ongoing “political witch hunt” targeting former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and “censorship of protected expression in the United States.”The decision came hours after Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered police to search Bolsonaro’s home and attach an electronic monitor to the former leader’s ankle. Bolsonaro, who has already had his passport confiscated, is now also subject to a nightly and weekend curfew.Under the same order signed by de Moraes, Bolsonaro is barred from using social media, communicating with foreign diplomats, or getting close to foreign embassies. Earlier this year, he was denied a request to temporarily get his passport back so he could attend President Donald Trump’s second inauguration ceremony.Separately, de Moraes is leading an aggressive investigation into so-called “digital militias” accused of spreading disinformation and hate speech during the Bolsonaro administration.Last year, he temporarily banned X across the country after the Elon Musk-owned social media platform refused to remove certain accounts—many linked to Bolsonaro supporters—that de Moraes said had violated Brazilian law.As Bill Pan reports for The Epoch Times, Rubio condemned the court’s actions as politically motivated repression.“President Trump made clear that his administration will hold accountable foreign nationals who are responsible for censorship of protected expression in the United States,” Rubio said in a statement.“Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes’s political witch hunt against Jair Bolsonaro created a persecution and censorship complex so sweeping that it not only violates basic rights of Brazilians, but also extends beyond Brazil’s shores to target Americans,” he continued.“I have therefore ordered visa revocations for Moraes and his allies on the court, as well as their immediate family members, effective immediately.”De Moraes is presiding over Bolsonaro’s trial, in which the former president faces charges of an attempted coup related to the Jan. 8, 2023, protests at Brazil’s federal government buildings.Authorities allege the protests were part of a broader conspiracy to overturn the 2022 election results that brought Bolsonaro’s left-wing rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to power.Bolsonaro has consistently denied wrongdoing or any involvement in the alleged coup plot. He has not been convicted, but is nonetheless barred from running for public office until 2030.His treatment has become a flashpoint in the escalating standoff between the Trump and Lula administrations. Last week, the U.S. president threatened to impose a 50 percent tariff on Brazilian goods unless Bolsonaro’s prosecution was dropped.Trump also cited Brazil’s non-tariff trade barriers in his decision to impose the new tariff rate. Meanwhile, Brazil is one of the roughly two dozen countries that run a trade deficit with the United States, while almost all other countries targeted by Trump’s tariff measures post large surpluses.“There will be no Tariff if Brazil, or companies within your Country, decide to build or manufacture product within the United States and, in fact, we will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely—in other words, in a matter of weeks,” Trump wrote.Following Friday’s police raid, Bolsonaro’s son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, took to social media to urge Trump to “suspend the 50 percent tariff on Brazilian imports and impose individual sanctions instead.”The post was later deleted.Lula has dismissed Trump’s accusations of unfair trade practices as false and denounced Rubio’s visa revocations as improper interference in Brazil’s judiciary.“The interference of one country in another’s justice system is unacceptable and violates the basic principles of respect and sovereignty among nations,” Lula wrote on X.“I am certain that no form of intimidation or threat, from anyone, will compromise the most important mission of national powers and institutions, which is to act permanently in defense and preservation of the Democratic Rule of Law.” Tyler DurdenSat, 07/19/2025 - 22:45

First alert: Downpours, severe storms possible today (live radar)

What a nice day Saturday but now changes will set in with round of scattered strong thunderstorms coming in Sunday afternoon and evening. The greatest threat being damaging wind gusts. A cold front sweeping through the region will help spark a line of storms between 2 and 10 p.m. Small hail is possible and localized flooding/water on the roads possible. These storms should move quickly to avoid higher flash flood potential. It will feel muggy through the day with highs in the 80s and dew points near 70 making it feel more like the low 90s. Behind the front, to start the week, a gorgeous stretch. Highs in the 70s to low 80s, low humidity, and cool nights dipping into the 50s.Pleasant days hold through midweek before heat and humidity return quickly by Thursday and especially Friday. Highs could push well into the 90s again, and another round of storms is possible sometime Friday or Friday night as the next front approaches. Most of the week looks dry though, making for a nice break from the unsettled pattern.
