U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement related encounters around the Boston area have turned into anxiety for some people.Federal officials have been very clear – they are increasing ICE activity in and around Boston. It’s been raising questions about what people should be doing if they see what appears to be an ICE operation underway.We’ve seen cell phone videos recently showing ICE activity in East Boston and Chelsea. The activity has put some people on edge across the region as Homeland Security announces ramped up operations.“It is pretty scary to see ICE in the neighborhood and stuff,” Jordan Gustave said.“Personally, I think it is pretty despicable. And scary,” added Leah Krason.Cambridge City Council members discussed activity in their community at their last meeting.“People are really scared and nervous,” Vice Mayor Marc McGovern said. “I think everyone is on edge.”Cambridge has offered know your rights training to the public and city officials. But they also urge residents to call 911 or the non-emergency line if they see something that concerns them.“The department will take steps to verify ICE activity in order to ensure it is a legitimate government sanctioned) operation,” Cambridge police said in a statement. “CPD’s role in this situation is to maintain a safe environment for all involved and enforce any violations in criminal law.”“At the end of the day, ICE is a federal agency that wants to apprehend someone,” McGovern said. “The Cambridge police can’t stop them from doing that.”Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said community organizations like LUCE Immigrant Justice Network have set up hotlines to help share and document activity information. “We have also, through our Office of Police Accountability and Transparency, taken reports where tactics might be questionable or cross the line as far as what is appropriate or legal,” she said.Cambridge police said they have even issued velcro placards for the back of their outer unfiorms saying “Cambridge” and “Police” to distinguish them from other law enforcement agencies.
