RSS Resurgence: Escaping Social Media Algorithms for Curated Feeds

RSS, an old protocol for subscribing to website updates, is resurging amid frustration with algorithm-driven social media. Tools like NetNewsWire enable direct, ad-free content pulling, promoting user-curated feeds and digital minimalism. Despite niche adoption, its decentralization and efficiency could redefine intentional content consumption in a post-social-media era.

Ask Paul: August 29 (Premium)

Happy Friday! A very busy month of travel for me begins on Monday, so let's kick off my last weekend as a free man with some great reader questions. Clearly, we have worries.🎮 The future of Xbox is portable, or hybrid, or somethinghastin asks:Any thoughts on the "Xbox Full Screen Experience" they have been demoing as part of the ROG Xbox Ally preview? Does this feel like the "future of Xbox" to you?Yes. Yes, it does.Personally, I think this could solve some of the gripes that gamers have about Windows 11, especially if you can do the full-screen experience on any device. Might be great for standalone PCs as well, especially if hooked up to a display. It astonishes me how negatively people--for lack of a better term, maybe "fans"--react to things these days. But when I look at what's happening with Xbox, and this has been true for several years, I see this set of huge problems that could have easily destroyed this business. And then I see a team at Xbox doing everything it can to not just rescue the business but turn the platform into something truly special. This isn't just "making lemonade." It's more like they were handed lemons and turned it into gold.Backward compatibility, cross-play, cross-progression, Play Anywhere, on and on it goes, and what that all adds up to is the most gamer-centric gaming platform there is. And now we're seeing what appears to be a transition from a console family that's failed to a PC-based gaming platform that can work across a range of devices, from desktop PCs to laptops to gaming handhelds and, I think, to what will essentially be PC-based consoles. And instead of doom and glooming this, seeing it as Xbox somehow losing everything that it was supposed to be, I see this all as making Xbox better. As a business, but also for me as a customer and fan.But I don't have to watch this video to know that this UI makes sense. Microsoft has been working toward this moment for years via an endless series of improvements to the Xbox app, which becomes the shell on these gaming handhelds, and the Game Bar overlays. And we learned more recently about its efforts to simplify and optimize Windows so that it makes sense as a console/appliance-like system that, by the way, still runs Windows apps. And this is important. A PC-based Xbox means we will be playing Xbox console games on PCs, and playing PC games on Xbox consoles in the future. This is exciting. It broadens what's possible dramatically.Today, you can join the Xbox Insider Program, get the latest Xbox app with these updates and the third-party store integration, put it in Compact mode, and use it with a controller and see what this is like. And it's a lot like using an Xbox console ... but with the power of full Windows and whatever a PC can do too. This might be viewed like Apple stripping down Mac OS X to make sense in an iPhone. It might also be like Apple finally turning the iPad into a true PC without ruining the iPad-ness ...The post Ask Paul: August 29 (Premium) appeared first on Thurrott.com.

As AI Makes Hiring A 'Cat And Mouse Game,' Enterprising Candidates Are Going Retro

Earlier this year, Tyler Sorenson took an old-school approach to landing a job. He walked into a brick-and-mortar tech repair company, handed them an unsolicited paper resume, and hoped for the best."I literally just had to walk into that store and hand them an actual résumé for them to even take a look at me,” he told Business Insider. “I got a call a week later where they were asking me to formally apply.”Prior to the paper resume debacle, Sorenson, like many job seekers, had become frustrated with the state of hiring. He was hearing about understaffed businesses and seeing plenty of companies post job openings online, but he couldn't get anyone to look at his resume or initiate an interview.Don't Miss:The same firms that backed Uber, Venmo and eBay are investing in this pre-IPO company disrupting a $1.8T market — and you can too at just $2.90/share.Kevin O'Leary Says Real Estate's Been a Smart Bet for 200 Years — This Platform Lets Anyone Tap Into ItAs hiring has slowed and AI has become a staple in the process, job hunting has become increasingly frustrating. Apple TV+ sitcom Trying is coming to the BBC

Soon, folks in the UK will be able to check out Apple TV+ series Trying for free (well, other than the cost of a TV license). The BBC has picked up the rights to the first three seasons of the show. The Beeb will broadcast it on TV and stream it on iPlayer starting on September 8.According to Deadline, the deal includes the option for the BBC to pick up more seasons of Trying, which — as it happens — is produced by a commercial arm of the corporation. Apple greenlit a fifth season earlier this year. This marks the first time that the BBC has picked up an Apple TV+ series, but deals such as this aren’t uncommon. BBC rival ITV scooped up Apple TV+ series Suspicion earlier this year for its ITVX streaming service. Sales distributor Fifth Season is said to have brokered that deal. Last year, Fifth Season was shopping around other Apple TV+ shows, such as See, Roar and Servant. We’ve seen other instances of streaming services and production companies taking their projects to other platforms to get some more eyeballs on them and try to earn more revenue. A couple of years ago, Warner Bros. Discovery yanked shows including Westworld from (HBO) Max in favor of streaming them on free, ad-supported platforms. The BBC has also partnered with Disney+ to stream Doctor Who internationally. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/tv-movies/apple-tv-sitcom-trying-is-coming-to-the-bbc-144552532.html?src=rss

Apple's iPhone 17 'Awe dropping' event is on September 9 — Here's what we expect
2025-08-28

Apple's iPhone 17 'Awe dropping' event is on September 9 — Here's what we expect

We're now less than two weeks away from the Apple iPhone 17 event. Themed "Awe dropping" this year, the event — confirmed after Apple sent "save the date" invitations to the media on August 26 — will be livestreamed on YouTube September 9 at 1PM ET from Cupertino. And Engadget staff will be there, reporting and liveblogging from Apple Park to give their hands-on impressions. This year is shaking up to be a departure from recent September product rollouts, with the strong possibility of an all-new superthin iPhone expected to join the company's lineup. Also on tap could be new Apple Watch models — including the first truly new Ultra model in two years — and (maybe) the long-awaited AirPods Pro 3.That rumored thin iPhone — possibly called the iPhone Air — would be the newcomer of what's expected to be four new handsets this year. Expected to be roughly 5.55 mm thick, it would be the thinnest iPhone yet, besting 2014's iPhone 6 which, at 6.9 mm, was the previous svelteness champ. And they've only gotten chunkier since then. (The iPhone 16 Pro has a depth of 8.25 mm.) The Air would also give Apple a direct rival to Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge, which we found to be more than a gimmick. But the iPhone Air's thin design will likely lead to some compromises. It's rumored to have only a single 48 MP camera and a smaller battery. So, expect a stylish phone that... won't be for everyone. This is the image that accompanied Apple's event invitations this year.AppleThe Pro lineup could offer some design tweaks and performance improvements. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to switch from titanium to aluminum. They could also see the rear camera array expand to an entire "island" that extends across most of the phone's backside. It's expected to house three cameras (as before), but multiple rumors have suggested it will have an improved telephoto one. The zoom lens could jump to 48MP, which would strengthen its digital zooming / cropping chops. The phones may also add an anti-glare coating, similar to those found on iPads. The standard iPhone 17 could see some welcome display upgrades. At least one supply chain source claimed it will add a 120Hz variable refresh rate (ProMotion) display, which the Pro series has used since 2021.AppleOne thing we know without a doubt is that the new iPhones will launch with iOS 26, which brings Apple's biggest design refresh in years. It's easy to imagine the company highlighting the new model's displays as the best way to experience the new Liquid Glass visual language. As for the naming scheme, there haven't been any leaks pointing to a similar hardware rebranding ("iPhone 26," "iPhone 26 Pro," etc.). But hey, Apple does like surprises.Engadget's iPhone 17 rumor roundup gives you a deeper dive into what to expect from the new models.Cherlynn Low for EngadgetApple's fall event isn't just for iPhones. The company is also expected to roll out new Apple Watch models. 5G and a processor upgrade are expected for the Apple Watch Ultra 3. It may also let you send texts via satellite, handy for those who use it out in the wilderness. Regardless of the details, Apple hasn't launched a new rugged and premium model since 2023 (apart from a new color), so it's due for an upgrade. The Series 11 model is unlikely to depart dramatically from the Series 10. After all, that model introduced a new design, with a thinner body and larger screen. (And Apple has historically kept those around in three-year cycles.). But a faster chip also seems logical. Perhaps we'll see 5G arrive on the standard wearable, too.We may also see the AirPods Pro 3 at the event. It's been about three years since Apple last upgraded its premium earbuds. The new model could also bring some biometric sensors to the earphones: an in-ear heart-rate monitor and (maybe) temperature sensing. Live translation is also rumored, although that may not be exclusive to the third-gen model. But don't expect major design changes, if the latest reports from leaker Majin Bu (via MacRumors) are to be believed: In addition to a "slight reduction in size," Bu notes the case will lose the physical pairing button, while gaining capacitive controls. Will there be other announcements? Time will tell, but now we know we won't have to wait long to find out. The official countdown clock has begun, and the answers are just days away.Update, August 28, 2025, 10:45AM ET: Added new report on AirPods 3 case details. Update, August 26, 2025, 5:41PM ET: Added confirmation of official event invitation, date and time. Easing the pressure on the electrical grid with AI
2025-08-28

Easing the pressure on the electrical grid with AI

It’s said that the U.S. electrical grid—a nationwide labyrinth of interconnected power plants, transmission lines, substations, and more—is the largest machine in the world. If that’s the case, this machine is starting to sputter. After decades of flat electricity demand, this infrastructure-heavy ecosystem has begun an era of dramatic complexity: AI-driven data centers are proliferating rapidly, each demanding hundreds of megawatts; the electric vehicle (EV) industry is booming, along with its fast-growing charging infrastructure sector; and all the while, the energy transition continues to confound utilities, which must ‘park’ new energy from renewables in vast storage systems strewn across the country, until it can be safely released onto the grid. The upshot: over the next five to 10 years, North America will be at “elevated or high risk” of energy shortfalls, according to the North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC).1There is a way through the complexities, however. For Hitachi, a company with a heritage in energy and industrial technologies, as well as decades in AI, such challenges require a methodical approach. They require boiling down the industrial problems into multiple, workable mathematical problems; tackling one challenge at a time, methodically with AI; and utilizing the unique capabilities and expertise from Hitachi Group companies. This is how Hitachi is easing the mounting pressures on the grid.Taming computational demandIt’s the kind of approach the company brought to a major regional grid operator in the U.S., that was looking for help reducing the extraordinary length of time needed for the requisite impact studies – formal reports needed before introducing new energy sources onto the grid. It’s also the approach Hitachi takes to build some of the most comprehensive and reputable datasets on energy generation and consumption, from which it can test models to achieve the most reliable outcomes. And while some view industrial challenges with a disruptive mindset, Hitachi knows when to embrace industrial AI as a “co-pilot.” Its technology works alongside systems in which utilities have made significant investments, rather than replacing them. “We will be part of the utility ecosystem as an accelerator,” says Bo Yang, vice president and head of the Energy Solutions Lab at Hitachi America R&D.According to Yang, disruptive innovation has its place. But there’s also a practical reason for this approach: the computational demands are enormous. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) guidelines require exhaustive analysis of how new power generation affects grid stability, not just under current conditions, but across future scenarios and potential system failures.Take the grid project. When power companies apply to connect new generators, operator’s software must run tens of thousands of simulations to ensure grid stability. This process traditionally took years. Hitachi’s industrial AI technology speeds up the analysis by running multiple calculations simultaneously, a technique known as parallel processing, while the operator’s existing software stays in place to validate complex cases and final results. This hybrid approach reduced analysis times by 80%—reducing total review time from 27 months to within a year—while maintaining the rigorous safety standards the industry demands. The village approachConnecting new generators to the grid requires complex collaboration across the energy industry. Multiple stakeholders—project developers, independent system operators, transmission operators, regulators, and others—each rely on data-driven analysis to make critical decisions. The entire “village” must reach consensus before new generation can connect to the grid.Success in this environment requires both deep industry knowledge and advanced AI capabilities. The Hitachi team working on the grid operator’s project includes power engineers with decades of experience who understand the mathematical and operational foundations of power system analysis. This expertise enables them to pinpoint which parts of the process can be accelerated by AI and which require traditional approaches.“AI specialists often have strong algorithmic skills, but they may not be focused on the right industry problems,” Yang says. “Meanwhile, legacy analytical tools—some dating back decades—have limitations that new AI methods can overcome when applied thoughtfully.”Breaking down complex problemsIndustrial challenges often involve highly complex, interconnected processes that can be broken down into smaller mathematical problems. In power systems, for example, this means separating the analysis into distinct tasks. Every task focuses on different aspects of grid stability and performance. Each component presents opportunities for AI acceleration while maintaining the physical constraints and safety requirements that govern power system operations. Industrial AI doesn’t need to reinvent the physics of power systems. It needs to accelerate the computational analysis that utilities already understand. This systematic approach extends beyond individual projects. The same industrial AI framework developed for power grid applications applies to other physics-based analytical processes across industries—from rail transportation systems where safety is paramount, to manufacturing operations requiring precise control, to mobility solutions demanding real-time optimization.“The key is understanding the specific problem you’re solving and then determining which AI technique to apply,” Yang says. This problem-first methodology suggests how the same framework might work across different industries.Industrial AI is differentUtilities carry enormous responsibility for infrastructure that powers entire regions. This creates a fundamental challenge for AI adoption: algorithms alone aren’t enough. Effective implementation requires deep understanding of operational constraints, regulatory requirements, and the physics of power systems that takes years to accumulate and validate. This reality makes industrial AI fundamentally different. It’s not about disrupting existing systems. It’s about enhancing them with the precision that critical infrastructure demands. The most revolutionary AI is often the most methodical—not because it lacks ambition, but because it simply can’t afford to fail._____________________For more information about Hitachi’s industrial AI work, visit: AI Resource Center – Hitachi Digital1 Urgent Need for Resources Over 10-Year Horizon as Electricity Demand Growth Accelerates: NERC | American Public Power Association

Varda Raises $187 Million To Propel In-Space Medicine Manufacturing

Varda Space Industries completed a $187 million Series C funding round in July, lifting the total capital haul for the space startup to $329 million. Natural Capital and Shrug Capital led the fundraiser, with participation from Founders Fund, Peter Thiel, Khosla Ventures, Caffeinated Capital, Lux Capital and Also Capital.
